  • The European parliament – a model of representative democracy

    Janet Mather•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2001•Cited by: 9•References: 9

This article argues that the European Parliament (EP) provides a poor model of representative democracy, as the nature of its representativeness is rooted in a pre‐democratic form. If this is correct, the EP's experience might indicate that liberal representative democracy in western political systems has become an inadequate vehicle for governmental legitimacy. However, the EP could promote devolution of power, which is a prerequisite for a more…

  • Labour and the English regions

    Janet Mather•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•2000•Cited by: 2

  • What are the Democratic Impediments to Participatory Democracy

    Open Access•Janet Mather•ARTICLE•Politics•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper, whilst noting that there is a democratic deficit contained within liberal democratic poltical systems, argues that all known alternatives to present practices create their own problems for democracy. To demonstrate this, a variety of desirable democratic outcomes are examined alongside six main forms of exercising democratic input. The best form of input according to the criteria is identified. This form, ‘demarchy’, which is found fi…
