Clinical Overrides With the YLS/CMI
This study explores the use of clinical override with the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI), including implications for predictive validity as well as the factors associated with this practice. The sample included 597 justice-involved youth from a metropolitan region in Québec, Canada. The clinical override was used in 32.5% of cases, usually to increase risk levels (30.3% of cases). As found in previous studies, clinical…

Identity and Trust in Bosnia & Hercegovina
Political elites continue to instil notions of fear of the Other in Bosnia & Hercegovina (BiH), which could lead to renewed violence in a context of growing socio-economic and political instability. Considerable literature on BiH indicates that more should have been done to foster reconciliation between the antagonists. The purpose of this article is to clarify the relationship between trust, a crucial element of reconciliation, and identity. Bas…
Disentangling Promotive and Buffering Protection
The quality of risk assessment instruments has improved greatly during the last 40 years. While assessing protective factors has become common practice, with some instruments now devoted entirely to such assessments, little is known about the effect of risk and protective factors on recidivism. The present study investigates the effects (promotive or buffering protective) of protective factors captured by the LS/CMI for a sample of 18,031 convict…

Considering Group‐level Emotions as a Factor for Change Amid Increasing Tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)
Traumatic events such as wars and genocides generate powerful emotions, most notably fear and distrust. Based on analysis of in‐depth field interviews, this article aims to deepen our understanding of the role of emotion in the reconciliation process by means of concepts described in the intergroup emotions theory. This paper begins with an overview of the literature on intergroup emotions theory and then discusses the implications of group‐level…
Genocide Denial
The denial of the Armenian genocide led to devastating effects on both the individual and collective levels which in many cases were passed down to their descendants. In BiH, many of the facts are not denied per se but the interpretation is such that genocidal intent is denied. While some research has been done on the consequences of trauma among BiH survivors, no in-depth studies are found on the effects of denial on the survivors’ psychosocial …
Local Peacebuilding, Trauma, and Empowerment in Bosnia–Herzegovina
The main argument of this article emphasizes the intimate connections which exist between the opportunity for participation and the possibilities of healing in the peacebuilding context of Bosnia–Herzegovina (BiH). More specifically, the goal is to examine how trauma is managed in such a way as to exclude the nonelite locals—the ordinary citizens—labeled as traumatized and how this exclusion affects both the “traumatized” and the potential outcom…

Peacebuilding, Healing, Reconciliation
This article explores the notions of ‘healing’ and ‘reconciliation’ as they are used in the literature on peacebuilding. It argues that these notions are used vaguely and that they are deployed to discriminate between ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ approaches to peacebuilding. As such, they render invisible complex connections between the psycho-social processes associated with healing and the political processes associated with reconciliation. Numer…
Reconciliation and Justice after Genocide
Thi s article argues that the post-confl ict reconciliation process is undermined by the importance given to the retributive form of justice dominating peacebuild- ing and transitional justice measures. Retributive justice reinforces the division between perpetrator and victim, thus undermining the reconciliation process between antagonistic parties. The s o-called objective categories of perpetrator and victim, so crucial for the administration …
