  • The dictée in multilingual contexts

Ann Beer, Mary H Maguire et al.•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2008

We examine a familiar classroom task: the dictation exercise or dictée. This apparently simple pedagogical practice occurs in a variety of language learning settings internationally. Using extracts from our multilingual research group members’ narratives and conversations, we explore dictation in six language contexts (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Armenian, French and English). The narratives are organized into four themes: power issues in the clas…

  • Points of enunciation

Ephie Konidaris, Mary H Maguire et al.•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2008

This inquiry presents portraits of two Greek adults’ perceptions of growing up as ‘Bill 101’ trilinguals in Montreal. This urban space is a unique location to understand how allophone students take up or revise their subject positions in becoming and being trilingual. Bakhtin’s dialogic theory and Bourdieu’s theory of capital provide a conceptual frame to understand their perceptions of the role of particular resources in their trilingualism and …

Mary H Maguire, Mary Maguire et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage Language Journal•2007

This article focuses on the identity accounts of a group of Chinese children who attend a heritage language school. Bakhtin’s concepts of ideological becoming, and authoritative and internally persuasive discourse, frame our exploration. Taking a dialogic view of language and learning raises questions about schools as socializing spaces and ideological environments. The children in this inquiry articulate their own ideological patterns of alignme…

Mary H Maguire, Mary Maguire et al.•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2001•Cited by: 2

This article explores the complex relationship between L2 writing and identity construction through an examination of ESL learners' journal writing. We adopt a constructivist, sociocultural-historical framework to examine the discourses, texts, and voices of three 8-year-old Muslim girls as they learn English, their third language, in a culturally diverse primary school in urban Montreal, Canada. To understand how writing intersects with identity…

Despite a long-standing interest within applied linguistics in the analysis of written genres, few studies have attempted to show how such genres are appropriated by new members in academic or workplace settings. Based on a 22-month qualitative study, this article reports on how francophone nurses, who were newly hired in an English-medium hospital in Montreal, Canada, developed skill in writing nursing notes (which differed from the way they wer…
