    Open Access•Kirsten L Grieve, Stephen L Muzzatti•ARTICLE•Zoophilologica•2023

Cat overpopulation in Toronto, Canada, is a serious and growing problem. Small, and frequently isolated, groups of volunteers work in a variety of capacities to help mitigate the large numbers of litters produced by stray and feral cats. One such organisation is Toronto Street Cats. This volunteer group works with the help of the Toronto Humane Society to operate a monthly trap/neuter/release (TNR) programme. Groups of caretakers look after regis…

  • Teaching and doing anti-criminology

    Claudio Colaguori, Stephen L Muzzatti•ARTICLE•Contemporary Justice Review•2022

As both first-generation, working-class Canadians from Italian immigrant families we were very much outsiders to the academy when we began our respective university studies in the late 1980s. Today, as third-generation critical criminologists, we strive to bring an intersectional perspective to the classroom and to likewise enable marginalized students to find their voice and position themselves as active subjects, not objects of others’ inquiry.…

  • Mass Media and Socialization

    Open Access•Stephen L Muzzatti, Brandon Rigato•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2020•Cited by: 2

Socialization is a lifelong process through which people learn the patterns of their culture. This process is facilitated by a host of agents of socialization such as the family unit, the educational system, peer groups, and the mass media. This entry focuses on the role of the mass media in the process of socialization. The mass media's increasing ubiquity and ever divergent forms leave little question as to their pervasiveness. While they are a…

    Dawn L Rothe, Stephen L Muzzatti et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Justice Review•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Capitalism has led to the appropriation of oppressed groups, their experiences and narratives. We believe this includes narratives and given value of the dead where there remains a continuation of inequalities of life unto death and being dead. Specifically, we suggest that the discrepancy of the value of the dead is the result of the links between power, politics, and hegemonic discourse embedded in neoliberalism that propagate and reify unequal…

Socialization is a lifelong process through which people learn the patterns of their culture, including behavioral expectations, values, and “truths.” This process is facilitated by a host of groups and institutions such as the family unit, the educational system, peer groups, and the mass media. Debates in sociology and related social sciences over the relative importance and impact of these agents on individual behavior have raged for decades w…

  • Constructing Crime

Kenneth Dowler, Ken Dowler et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Criminology•2006

Arguably one of most significant and potentially illuminating areas of criminological inquiry is analysis of media, and popular culture. As residents of a highly technological society undergoing rapid transformations in conduits for information on we have an increasing array of options in forming our ideas about crime and justice. A staple assertion of introductory texts and lectures is that societal perceptions of crime are formed through exposu…

    Open Access•Stephen L Muzzatti•ARTICLE•Illness Crisis & Loss•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 12

Whether it's a story about crime, the weather, politics, Hollywood celebrities, or public health, sensationalistic and exploitative coverage is a media staple. The mass media's coverage of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the spring of 2003 was no exception. The media's construction of the source, virulence, and transmissibility of this disease, a previously unknown cousin of the common cold, diverged considerably from …
