  • Impact of increased police presence in a non-criminogenic area

    Emmanuel P Barthe, B Grant Stitt•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2011

Police experiments typically study saturation patrols and crackdown initiatives in high crime areas. Similarly, some evaluation efforts focus on the efficacy of problem-solving techniques to reduce offending rates in crime hot spots. However, little academic attention has been paid to the impact of these types of approaches on affluent neighborhoods because these types of crime control initiative are not routinely carried out in intact neighborho…

Emmanuel Barthe, Emmanuel P Barthe et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2009

Utilizing police calls for service data this study examines the relationship between different crime hotspots across a gaming jurisdiction (Reno, Nevada). Conventional wisdom suggests that casinos play a role in the creation, maintenance, and nature of crime hotspots; however, prior analyses of this relationship have been inconsistent. This study looks at the city’s various crime hotspots and compares them according to crime type and spatial–temp…

This article compared rates of underage casino gambling by students in two different regions of the country. Although Reno has long had casinos, Memphis residents have had access to casinos only since 1992 with the legalization of casino gambling in nearby Mississippi. The results indicate that 24.2% of underage Memphis r…

In this article we describe an innovative idea for use in evaluating criminal justice programs. After summarizing some concerns related to the measurement of accountability and the program review process, we introduce and discuss the use of focus groups as an assessment tool. Then we present the advantages and disadvantages of focus groups as applied to evaluation of criminal justice programs. We conclude that focus groups can be a valuable asset…

David Giacopassi, David J Giacopassi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1991•References: 7

On a global basis, alcohol has been recognized to be associated with all forms of human problems. A thorough review of the literature on crime and alcohol-related problems reveals a paucity of empirical studies of the relationship of alcohol consumption to crime rates. This study examines that relationship and suggests what might be additional analytical refinements which should be made to further specify the relationship of alcohol consumption t…

  • Siblings and Delinquent Behavior

    Open Access•Karen Wilkinson, B Grant Stitt et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1982•Cited by: 4•References: 15

This exploratory article examines the relation between sibling structure (sex of siblings and birth order) and self‐reported delinquency. The processes of contrast and imitation, conceptual notions derived from research on sibling structure and sex roles, are used to guide this exploration. Considerable variation in delinquency by sibling status was identified. There are indications that an interaction effect exists between birth order and sex of…

Paul V Crosbie, Frank A Petroni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1972•Cited by: 1

Noting the limited understanding of group dynamics among health researchers using corrective groups, this paper proposes that a number of principles already established in the field of small groups might be used to facilitate the processes of conformity and social control in corrective groups. An exploratory experiment designed to test the eflects of several group characteristics was conducted with smoking cessation groups. The experiment, with s…
