  • Inventing in a Crisis: Lighting the United States after the 1973 Oil Embargo

    H D Wallace•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2021

Political events can shape innovations. The 1973 oil embargo pushed the U.S. lighting industry to develop energy-saving lamps and designs. It led to federal mandates for lighting efficiency standards. This article examines changes in lighting system technology during the 1970s and 1980s in their historical context and describes their effect on subsequent public policy. At first, manufacturers introduced novel devices for diverse markets, dependin…

  • Dating Snaketown

    H D Wallace•ARTICLE•KIVA•2020•References: 15

The development of a refined chronology and ceramic sequence for the heartland of the Hohokam Culture in southern and central Arizona is discussed. The refined sequence is applied to ceramic sherd lots and restorable vessels from the extant collections from excavations at Snaketown to produce new and more refined dating of the contexts at the site. Structures, mortuary contexts, caches, mounds, middens, pits, and other features are dated with the…

  • The Transition to History in Pimería Alta

    W H Doelle, H D Wallace•CHAPTER•Perspectives on Southwestern…•2019

This chapter presents examination of the archaeological data for the terminal portion of the Hohokam sequence briefly reviews the chronology of the Classic period and focuses on settlement distribution and regional interaction during late Classic times. Comparison of regional systems then yields some intriguing hypotheses regarding both stability and change over the time period from A.D. 1300 to 1700. Temporal resolution for the late Classic peri…

  • New Insights into Hohokam Buff Ware Production and Distribution

    Open Access•M F Ownby, James M Heidke et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Hohokam buff ware pottery produced in Arizona has been much studied over the last few decades. However, petrographic analysis has been less frequently applied, due in part to mistaken assumptions regarding the raw materials utilized. The current study reexamined the use of petrography for locating the provenance of buff ware pottery from two sites, La Villa in the Phoenix area and Honey Bee Village in the Tucson area. The petrographic results sug…

  • Hohokam Origins

    H D Wallace, James M Heidke et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 12

The corpus of 350 radiocarbon and archaeomagnetic dates available for Pioneer and Colonial period contexts in southern Arizona is rigorously evaluated for its relevance to chronology building, resulting in the identification of 31 dates that may be unequivocally applied. Taken with other pertinent data, a new chronology is presented for the Hohokam sequence. The implications of this chronology, which is notably shortened for the post- Vahki phase…

  • Elemental analysis and characterization of ochre sources from Southern Arizona

    Open Access•Rachel S Popelka-Filcoff, Elizabeth J Miksa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2007•Cited by: 26•References: 3

  • A Revised Chronology of the Plain Ware and Red Ware Horizons in South and Central Arizona

Michael Lindeman, Michael W Lindeman et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The dating of the Plain Ware and Red Ware horizons in southern and central Arizona is evaluated using the pooled probability method for examining groups of radiocarbon dates. The analysis proceeds in two steps. First all radiocarbon dates for the Plain and Red Ware horizons are examined and a boundary between the two horizons is suggested. The second step incorporates architectural information and generates pooled probability distributions for sp…

  • The Classic Period in the Tucson Basin

    H D Wallace, James P Holmlund•ARTICLE•KIVA•1984•Cited by: 6

Evidence for a Sedentary-Classic transitional Cortaro phase is reviewed and found wanting. Settlement patterns and community organization for the Tanque Verde and Tucson phases are summarized and a new model of Classic period society in the Tucson Basin is presented. Speculation on the possible cause ot the collapse of Classic period society is offered
