Worlds in bodies
In this introductory essay, we propose working definitions for the terms and concepts that frame this special issue, taking in academic and folk debates around the nexus of narrative, mind and play, specifically in relation to complexity. We argue that while human cognition is predisposed to storify experience, the mind itself is also storified. Because narrative is integral to the construction of reality and experience, we need a narrative liter…
Rimko van der Maar, In de ban van Vietnam
This recently published Dutch book is meant to reassess the ‘Vietnamese struggle for independence and the West,’ in the words of its subtitle. As such, the quote from journalist Neil Sheehan with which Rimko van der Maar precedes his work can be seen as a statement of intent: ‘There are some events that can be understood only with the perspective of time. The war in Vietnam is one’ (7). Exactly what the book hopes to understand better about, as V…
Disappointment is coming
In this study, we analyze two instances of highly mediatized relations between producers of popular culture and their fans. We argue that in such relations, there is a narrative push and pull between creator and audience around rules of engagement: explicitly or implicitly stated agreements about what audiences may expect and creators are expected to deliver. Breaking these rules can be experienced as deeply shocking. Our first case is Bill Drumm…
‘A Good Biographer Does Not Take the Easy Way’. In Conversation with Monica Soeting
Monica Soeting co-founded the European Journal of Life Writing, and the European section of the International Auto/Biography Association (IABA). As a life writing scholar, her research explores the construction of individual, cultural and political identities through life writing. She was journal manager of the European Journal of Life Writing from 2011 to 2019, and before that she worked as an editor on the Dutch Biografie Bulletin, a journal of…
Introduction
To date, the notion of narrative literacy has remained underdeveloped. If it is used at all, it is mostly conceptualised as a creative skill: the capacity to turn experiences into narrative (Romero-Ivanova et al., 2019). In the context of our current “era of total narrativity” (Meneghelli 2013), in which everything either is, or should be presented as a story, it can be understood why this would be an important skill. In this special issue, howev…
What the ***k Is Going On? Conspiracy Theorizing, Undernarration, and Narrative Literacy
Narrative is both a form of interpretation and of communication. Narrative structure allows us to map events and experiences, and we use that structure both to make sense of those events and experiences, and to communicate the sense we made of them. With this in mind, it is possible to conceptualise how each form of narration has a corresponding interpretative strategy: to name but a few examples, unreliable narration teases out a hermeneutics of…
Islamization as an Artistic Technique
During the first decade of the twenty-first century, there was a remarkable return of ‘the real’ in European public spaces. Genuine efforts were made to establish a discourse of ‘self’ and ‘other’ that deliberately ignored one of the most striking features of contemporary global and multicultural societies: that we are confronted on an almost daily basis with the fact that everybody is somebody’s other. In this paper, I discuss work by Dutch mult…
The structured narrative interview
In this study, Greimas’s work on narrative structure is used to improve a specific practice: the research interview. In the social sciences, narrative interviewing often consists of collecting data from which a narrative is then constructed through analysis afterwards. In the interview method presented here, the interviewer instead prompts the interviewee to construct a narrative. We introduce the method, contextualize it by comparing it to previ…
“Or even Frisian, yes. No, no”
Negative attitudes towards minority languages in educational settings can have far-reaching consequences for pupils’ academic achievement and well-being, yet they prevail in most education systems. The current study adds to research on language attitudes in education by analysing the narrative negotiation of the value of Frisian, a minority language from the northern Netherlands. For this analysis, a number of narratives on experiences with Frisi…

Where is the child? Refugee narratives in contemporary European popular culture
Subjected to what has been called a ‘global mobility regime’, refugees will often find that their destination countries have a limited number of pre-cut identities ready for them and allow them little leeway beyond these. In this paper, we will discuss representations of refugees in European popular culture following the so-called 2015 Syrian refugee crisis. We will analyse the narratives in these representations, and how these negotiate both wha…
Hanna Meretoja. The Ethics of Storytelling
In The Ethics of Storytelling (2018), Hanna Meretoja proposes an approach to the study of narrative that foregrounds how interpretation takes place when people engage in storytelling, either as storyteller or as audience. This, she calls ‘narrative hermeneutics’: an inquiry into how narratives may instigate interpretation. Reading, listening to, watching a story is seen as an act of meaning-making, almost always leading to many different, sometim…
To Leave Your Kindred and Your Father’s House. Contemporary Dutch Christian Border Narratives
In this article the authors analyse a collection of essays written by young Dutch people who grew up in the Reformed Liberated Church, a small Christian denomination in the Netherlands. Traditionally, this church is characterised by its inwards nature: members strive to live their lives within the confinements that the church and its institutions stipulate. This has changed over the last few decades and the essays attest to the effects these chan…
