The intersection of pornography and racism in De Buitenvrouw and Alleen maar nette mensen
The references to pornography in the novels De Buitenvrouw (Joost Zwagerman) and Alleen maar nette mensen (Robert Vuijsje) alert the feminist reader to the intersection of racism and misogyny in the narratives of the protagonists. Some scenes in both novels accord with Andrea Dworkin's definition of pornography as the presentation of sexual abuse. Dworkin and MacKinnon's theory of the effects of pornography is interrogated by Judith Butler who re…
Kinderidentiteit, ras en seksualiteit in Ons is nie almal so nie en Die reuk van appels
This article discusses the self-narration of two children, Marnus in Mark Behr’s Die reuk van appels (translated as The smell of apples, 1993) and Gertie in Jeanne Goosen’s Ons is nie almal so nie (1990), translated as We’re not all like that (2007). Both Gertie and Marnus take contradictory discourses (Coloureds both infe…

The border between rape and consensual sex is shown to be problematic in the relat…

‘N “Allegoriese” lesing van Lady Anne
In this article an "allegorical" reading of Antjie Krog's Lady Anne is attempted. The allegorical point‐for‐point similarities between Antjie and Anne include thematic (feminism and revolution), structural (both characters have concluding poems) and narratological (a "story" of concern about injustice supplanted by despair about art's function) resemblances. This allegorical process could be explained as the succession of abstract ideas; the port…
