Understanding pathways from primary health care to universal health coverage outcomes
Introduction: Primary Health Care (PHC) rooted in community empowerment, integrated service delivery, and multisectoral action is central to efforts toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), yet little is known about how PHC reforms influence UHC outcomes across contexts. This review examines how PHC approaches affect population coverage, service coverage, and financial protection by identifying what works, for whom, under what circumstances, and w…
Beyond the individual
Activity of daily living (ADL) limitations, such as difficulty walking or dressing, are increasing as populations age and experience more chronic conditions. To understand the scope of ADLs and make interventions more effective, it is important to examine ADLs beyond the individual to other levels and contexts, such as the household. Thus, using household and individual level survey data in India, we assess how household ADLs relate to the mental…
Implementation of Innovations in Skill Ecosystems
Being considered a driver of economic growth as well as social participation and inclusion, skill development and vocational education and training (VET) policies constitute possible solutions to present challenges and ongoing problems. Therefore, VET has been the distinct subject of attempts toward development and improvement over time. For more than two decades, VET reforms have been a specific focus of Indian educational governance. However, i…
Socioeconomic inequalities in adverse pregnancy outcomes in India
Although India has made substantial improvements in public health, it accounted for one-fifth of global maternal and neonatal deaths in 2015. Stillbirth, abortion, and miscarriage contribute to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. There are known socioeconomic inequalities in adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study estimated changes in socioeconomic inequalities in rates of stillbirth, abortion, and miscarriage in India across 15 years. We…
Women’s education through empowerment
Poor educational outcomes for women can adversely impact economic and social outcomes. Gender-based education disparity, often attributed to social norms, led to the development of a unique program, the Mahila Samakhya (MS), in India. This program aimed to develop women’s agency and voice to help them negotiate unequal gender norms. We explore the long-term impacts of MS on educational outcomes in India using the program’s phased rollout to addre…

Air Pollution and Respiratory Ailments among Children in Urban India
Using a multicity sample from India, we exploit city and fortnightly variation in air pollution to identify its causal effect on the incidence of a common respiratory ailment among children—cough. We account for key sources of confounding in this relationship with a two-way fixed effects estimation strategy. Our results show that air pollution, specifically, particulate matter, has a large and negative health effect that is robust to alternative …
Evidence on Community-Driven Development from an Indian Village
This article examines the functioning of a community-driven development (CDD) project that, unlike most CDDs, was set in a homogeneous community, consisted of simple tasks, had a year-long pre-intervention planning period, and maintained records of its decisions. To identify the impacts of the intervention on agricultural outcomes, and on strategies to manage risk, we use a semi-parametric difference-in-difference model that collected retrospecti…
Slums and Malnourishment
Objectives. We examined the association between slum residence and nutritional status in women in India by using competing classifications of slum type. Methods. We used nationally representative data from the 2005–2006 National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3) to create our citywide analysis sample. The data provided us with individual, household, and community information. We used the body mass index data to identify nutritional status, whereas th…
