  • Informality, self‐employment and heterogeneous managerial ability: A model for developing countries

Open Access•Eliane Badaoui, Olivier Bargain et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2024

The view of informal employment as a last resort in the labour market has recently been challenged by numerous studies documenting the existence of a high degree of heterogeneity within the formal and informal sectors. In particular, informal self‐employment/employment may be voluntary or forced. There is currently not much theoretical support for these observations. We develop a theoretical model of the labour market with both formal and informa…

  • Analysis of depressive symptoms between formal and informal workers in South Africa during Covid-19 crisis

Miracle Ntuli, Prudence Kwenda•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2023

This study examines differences in depressive symptoms between informal and formal workers in South Africa during the COVID-19 lockdown period. The analysis focuses on the June to October 2020 period, which was characterised by the easing of lockdown regulations from level 3 to level 1. Using the NIDS-CRAM wave 2 and 3 survey data, the study estimates a standard logit and a fixed effects logit model to account for worker’s unobserved heterogeneit…

  • Exploring unemployment differentials between former and non-former homeland areas in South Africa: A decomposition approach

Prudence Kwenda, Miracle Ntuli et al.•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2023

This study decomposes the unemployment rate gap between former and non-former homeland areas in South Africa. We apply the Oaxaca–Blinder [1973] decomposition technique to the 2011 population census community profiles at the main place level. Results indicate that former homeland areas suffer from relatively higher rates of unemployment compared to non-former homeland areas. The 24%-point difference is primarily explained by differences in former…

  • Poverty and inequality in the Gauteng City-Region

Phindile Ngwenya, Darlington Mushongera et al.•BOOK•Poverty and inequality in the…•2018

In this section we examine the poverty and inequality outcomes for Gauteng province during its first 15 years of democracy.Despite recording one of its longest periods of positive economic growth in the country's history since the end of apartheid in 1994, we find a significant increase in the poverty rate in the first five years of democracy, followed by a consistent, significant improvement in the welfare of Gauteng residents in the ten-year pe…

  • Intrahousehold distribution and poverty: Evidence from Côte d'Ivoire

  • The Informal Sector Wage Gap: New Evidence Using Quantile Estimations on Panel Data

Olivier Bargain, Prudence Kwenda•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 28

We estimate the informal-formal sector pay gap throughout the conditional wage distribution using panel data from Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa. We control for time-invariant unobservables, and identification stems from intersector movers. We control for observables in a nonlinear way using propensity score reweighting and carefully check for potential measurement errors. Using similar definitions of informality, we obtain consistent results f…
