  • Improving Parenting Practices for Child Development

Open Access•Anjali Chandra, Subha Mani et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2026

We examine the impact of an integrated parenting program designed to improve parent–child interactions. Exploiting experimental variation in program access, we show that the intervention improves the overall parenting practice index by 0.38 standard deviations and increases parental material investments by 0.64 standard deviations. We also find improvements in children's health, including a 3‐percentage‐point reduction in the prevalence of wastin…

  • Conscientiousness and Labour Market Outcomes

Open Access•Justine Hervé, Helene Purcell et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2026

Personality traits play an important role in determining earnings; however, the specific behaviours related to personality traits that explain the earnings differentials remain unclear. Using panel data from Indonesia, we examine the associations between Big Five personality traits and employment and earnings, as well as the potential channels linking personality to these outcomes. We find that conscientiousness is a robust predictor of both empl…

  • Social Identity, Behavior, and Personality

Open Access•Utteeyo Dasgupta, Subha Mani et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2023

Hierarchies in social identities are integrally related to divergences in economic status. In India, caste is a significant social identity where discriminatory practices have resulted in poor outcomes for the lower castes. While there is considerable research on differences in economic outcomes along caste lines, there is limited work on behavioral preferences and personality traits that can also be adversely affected by such identity hierarchie…

  • Effects of Peers and Rank on Cognition, Preferences, and Personality

Open Access•Utteeyo Dasgupta, Subha Mani et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2022

We exploit the variation in admission cutoffs across colleges at a leading Indian university to estimate the causal effects of enrolling in a selective college on cognitive attainment, economic preferences, and Big Five personality traits. Using a regression discontinuity design, we find that enrolling in a selective college improves university exam scores of the marginally admitted women and makes them less overconfident and less risk averse, wh…

  • Impact of the NREGS on Children’s Intellectual Human Capital

Subha Mani, Jere R Behrman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

This paper uses panel data from the Young Lives Survey to examine the effect of the world's largest public works program and India's flagship social protection program, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), on children's learning outcomes such as grade progression, reading comprehension test scores, writing test scores, math test scores, and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) scores. We find that the program has strong posit…

  • Intergenerational Transmission of Poverty and Inequality

Jere R Behrman, Whitney Schott et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 46

Academic and policy literatures on intergenerational transmissions of poverty and inequality suggest that improving schooling attainment and income for parents in poor households will lessen poverty and inequality in their children’s generation through increased human capital accumulated by their children. However, magnitudes of such effects are unknown. We use data on children born in the twenty-first century in four developing countries to simu…

  • Searching for religious discrimination among Anganwadi workers in India

Utteeyo Dasgupta, Subha Mani et al.•BOOK•Searching for religious…•2016

This paper examines whether, in India, discriminatory practices by government-employed child caregivers along religious lines, lead to differential health outcomes among the care receiving children. Child caregivers participate in a novel allocation game where we incorporate treatments to disentangle statistical and taste-based discrimination. Our findings find no evidence of taste-based discrimination or statistical discrimination among the chil…

  • Growth trajectories from conception through middle childhood and cognitive achievement at age 8 years

Open Access•Andreas Georgiadis, Liza Benny et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2016

Child chronic malnutrition is endemic in low- and middle-income countries and deleterious for child development. Studies investigating the relationship between nutrition at different periods of childhood, as measured by growth in these periods (growth trajectories), and cognitive development have produced mixed evidence. Although an explanation of this has been that different studies use different approaches to model growth trajectories, the diff…
