Exchange Rate Mechanism II and the risk of currency crisis – empiricism and theory
Currency participation in ERM II is conditional on the introduction of the fixed exchange rate regime. A fixed exchange rate is more at risk from a currency crisis than a flexible exchange rate. These concerns are also expressed in the official strategy for the introduction of euro in the Czech Republic. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the risk of a currency crisis using two methodological approaches. First, from the empirical perspective. …
The choice of exchange rate regime for Czech koruna in the context of ERM II participation and the related risks
Participation in the exchange rate mechanism ERM II (one of the Maastricht criteria -exchange rate stability) is compatible with certain exchange rate regimes only. The aim of this paper is to find arguments for choosing one of these regimes. The starting point is the current strategy of the euro introduction in the Czech Republic, and the expressed concerns about the risks associated with fixing of the exchange rate. The used method is analysis …
Simulation of the Czech koruna’s participation in ERM II – alternative approaches
The fulfillment of the exchange rate stability criterion requires at least a twoyear participation of the given currency in ERM II "without severe tensions". The Czech koruna does not participate in ERM II, inter alia because of risks which are connected with fixed exchange rate. The aim of this paper is to find out how to simulate such participation. At the beginning of the paper, current methods of assessment of the criterion fulfillment by the…
Perspectives of the accession of the Czech Republic to the Euro area in terms of the price level convergence
The replacement of the national currency with the euro is subject not only to the nominal convergence, but also to the real convergence of the country acceding to the monetary union. By default, the price levels convergence criterion is expressed as a deviation of the acceding country's price level from the average price level of the euro area. However, this method is not well suited to measure price convergence. The weighted deviation of the Cze…
The risk of currency crisis in the period of participating in exchange rate mechanism ERM II
In the course of exchange rate development history of the countries taking part and evaluated in ERM or ERM II before they entered the euro-area there was no depreciating evolution with a trend to currency crisis at all. Fundamental indicators of these economies, partly owing to the compliance with other Maastricht criteria, do not induce devaluation expectancions of investors. However, there is a danger in two other lines. Firstly there is the p…
