Green AI adoption from academia to industry in China
Green Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly promoted as a key technology for achieving sustainability goals, yet little is known about how these technologies diffuse across firms with different capabilities. This study asks how firm technological performance shapes the intensity of Green AI adoption from academia and how state involvement and contractual forms condition this process. Drawing on a novel dataset of 5201 academia–industry Gre…
New directions in innovation and development
This paper takes stock of twenty years of Globelics, a community that has transformed how innovation and development are understood in a global context. It shows how Globelics has contributed to placing the global South more centrally in innovation studies by putting learning, innovation and competence building at the heart of development. Reviewing contributions across five key themes, the paper highlights how Globelics has opened new conceptual…
Conditions for a successful latecomer development in green technologies
Innovation indicators show a strong increase in capabilities of latecomer countries in green technologies over the last 20 years. Latecomers have become leading origin of green technology publications, hold 27 per cent of green technology patents and 38 per cent of green technology exports. There is considerable heterogeneity between latecomer countries, indicating that each country follows a specific path that reflects domestic strengths and wea…
Do green foreign direct investments increase the innovative capability of MNE subsidiaries
Technologies to mitigate climate change may diffuse from lead markets to the rest of the world through several mechanisms and make important contributions to the global green transformation. In this paper, we explore the role played by multinational enterprises (MNEs) in transferring knowledge and innovative capabilities in green technologies to their global subsidiaries. We posit that the degree of green knowledge transfer and innovative capabil…
China’s investments in renewable energy in Africa
Investments in renewable energy are increasing rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent and under what conditions these investments are producing economic co-benefits in terms of spillovers and linkage development effects. One peculiarity of Africa’s renewable-energy sector is the rapid increase and likely future growth of Chinese involvement in large-scale renewable-energy infrastructure proje…
Innovation in developing countries
This article examines how the literature on innovation in developing countries has developed in the social science-related disciplines over the last two decades. While increasing fourfold in the last decade compared to the decade before, the bulk is on middle-income emerging economies. These emerging economies, especially China, increasingly shape the thematic orientation of the literature. In this respect, low-income countries remain marginal, a…
A decade of innovation and development
This year marks the tenth anniversary of Innovation and Development. This special anniversary issue brings together a set of reflective articles by key scholars in our field. Each article contributes in a different way to advance the agenda on innovation and its relations to sustainable and inclusive development. Several of the papers take a step back and reflect on overall developments in the field, and in this way, propose future directions. In…
The decomposition of innovation in Europe and China’s catch-up in wind power technology
Innovation is increasingly decentralized, traded and transferred internationally. Specialized suppliers of knowledge-intensive business services have emerged, enhancing the international transfer of knowledge and technology. This has important implications for the global geography of technological and innovative capabilities. This paper focuses on the role of European KIBS providers for the catch-up process in the Chinese wind turbine industry. D…

Innovation Trajectories in Developing Countries
This article investigates how combining global value chain and innovation system approaches can help to foster an understanding of the possible trajectories that learning and innovation may take in developing countries. Based on the wealth of empirical evidence collected in the special issue, we introduce the notion of the co-evolution of global value chains and innovation systems and outline a framework for investigating the interaction between …
Combining Innovation Systems and Global Value Chains for Development
Introduction to low-carbon innovation and development
This special issue seeks to bring together the fields of low-carbon development (LCD) and innovation studies. It contributes to the debate by addressing how the learning, innovation, and competence-building lens adds to the discussion about the development outcomes of climate change mitigation. The aim of this introductory article is fourfold. First, it discusses key advances in the debate about the role of innovation and competence building in L…
China's Impact on the Global Wind Power Industry
China's economic rise has transformed the global economy in a number of manufacturing industries. This paper investigates whether China's transformative influence extends to the new green economy. Drawing on the debate about how China is driving major economic changes in the world – the “Asian drivers” debate – it identifies five corridors of influence and investigates their relevance for the wind energy industries. Starting with the demand side,…
China-Europe Relations in the Mitigation of Climate Change
Despite the large-scale investments of both China and the EU in climate-change mitigation and renewable-energy promotion, the prevailing view on China–EU relations is one of conflict rather than cooperation. In order to evaluate the prospects of cooperation between China and the EU in these policy fields, empirical research has to go beyond simplistic narratives. This paper suggests a conceptual apparatus that will help researchers better underst…
Technology transfer in the clean development mechanism
Technology transfer? The rise of China and India in green technology sectors
International technology transfer is central to the debate about how to curb the carbon emissions from rapid economic growth in China and India. But given China and India's great progress in building innovation capabilities and green industries, how relevant is technology transfer for these countries? This paper seeks insights from three green technology sectors in both countries: wind power, solar energy and electric and hybrid vehicles. We find…
