Learning farmerhood
Women from urban backgrounds are increasingly taking up agricultural work in the UK. Lacking the cultural and material inheritances of family farming, their journeys are instead shaped through involvement with food activism. This paper draws on data from participant observation in agroecology movement spaces, interviewing with women farmers and food activists, and documentary analysis. It uses the lens of food pedagogies to examine the extent to …
Re-enchanting the research encounter with psychosocial group analysis, supervision and reflective journalling
The call to re-enchant research is both a theoretical and methodological provocation that transcends disciplines. Drawing on concepts of re-enchantment from different traditions, this article examines how psychosocial methods – in particular, the ‘Many Minds’ method of group analysis – can foster a research praxis that foregrounds interconnectedness and care. As an interdisciplinary researcher new to psychosocial inquiry, I reflect on my use of M…
Deliberative-analytic approaches to Ecosystem Services as a way forward for the land sparing/sharing debate
Growing concerns about the impacts of food systems have led to fierce debate over the pros and cons of different modes of production. In parallel, conservationists have debated “land-sparing” versus “land-sharing” as competing rationales for a land use policy that aims to halt biodiversity loss. As a contribution to these debates, we share research conducted in the South-East of England where contrasting practices for managing land and livestock …
People, nature and large herbivores in a shared landscape
In this exploratory study, we employ an interdisciplinary approach to explore potential synergies and trade‐offs between the needs of people and nature in the context of agroecological farming and nature conservation. Ecological field studies and management surveys from six sites were combined with a participatory‐deliberative appraisal exercise using the Multi‐Criteria Mapping (MCM) method. All six study sites and all four land use options in th…
Transforming knowledge systems for life on Earth
Formalised knowledge systems, including universities and research institutes, are important for contemporary societies. They are, however, also arguably failing humanity when their impact is measured against the level of progress being made in stimulating the societal changes needed to address challenges like climate change. In this research we used a novel futures-oriented and participatory approach that asked what future envisioned knowledge sy…
