  • Diversity-Specific Empowering Leadership

Open Access•Cara-Lynn Scheuer, Catherine Loughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2025

Achieving sex-based equity in organizational leadership roles has proven to be a ‘wicked’ problem with existing diversity initiatives providing minimal improvement. In this paper, we address this issue by considering a key inhibiter to women’s leadership advancement—biased perceptions of female leaders’ competence—and links to a climate for inclusion. In Study 1 ( N = 236), we develop and validate a Diversity-Specific Empowering Leadership (DSEL)…

  • Employment status congruence and job quality

    Open Access•Catherine Loughlin, Robert Murray•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 79

While recognizing the daunting task of defining universal indicators of job quality we may overlook something more fundamental: in North America about a third of people may not want to be employed in their current job status. Job status congruence (i.e. the extent to which people are working full-time, contract, or part-time by choice) may now be an integral part of high quality work. We test this proposition using a process-oriented theoretical …

  • Teenagers' part-time employment and their work-related attitudes and aspirations

Open Access•Catherine A Loughlin, Catherine Loughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1998

We assessed the relationship between the quality (i.e., job characteristics, role stressors, and interpersonal relationships) and quantity of part-time employment, and work-related attitudes and aspirations among 349 students. Neither the linear nor the quadratic components of employment quantity predicted any of the outcome variables. Motivation to do good work was predicted both by role stressors and by family achievement orientation. Career ma…

  • Psychological Needs Filled by Avian Companions

Catherine A Loughlin, Catherine Loughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•1993•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Pets are immensely popular in this country. However, the complex nature of human-animal interactions and the importance of these animals in everyday lives are not yet thoroughly understood. The human psychological needs that pet birds fulfill are even less understood than the role of other pets, such as dogs and cats. To compile a list of psychological needs filled by avian companions, 80 bird owners were asked to complete a survey that explored …
