Translating policy harmonization into practice—The case of the EU Blue Card Directive
This study introduces a translation perspective to analyze the policy harmonization process, highlighting imitation, brokering, and editing in shaping policy dynamics at EU and national levels. The translation perspective emphasizes that while policy development is ongoing, the protracted process signals a shift in EU‐wide coordination of skilled labor migration. We show how ongoing translation efforts have transformed the coordination of skilled…
Organizing Integration of Refugees: Translation and Hybridization
How is integration organized in practice, and what role do hybrids play in such practices? Based on fieldwork on two integration support initiatives for recent refugees in one of Sweden’s largest cities, this paper critically engages these questions, focusing in particular on integration as a multi-directional, ambiguous process that is shaped by the intervention of a great many agents. In line with previous research, we conclude that practices o…
Space and Organizing: On Spatial Agencing
This timely book explores how space emerges as people attempt to organize and reorganize their everyday activities. From the workplace to the internet, geographical districts to international development projects, it offers new insights on how created spaces enable further activities as the organizing process evolves. Expert contributors employ a poststructuralist perspective to look at the importance of agencing for understanding organizing with…
Organising Immigrants' Integration: Practices and Consequences in Labour Markets and Societies
The focus of the chapters is on actions, processes, and complexity of organising practices, in contrast to more policy-oriented works.
Organizing Immigrants' Integration: Practices and Consequences in Labor Markets and Societies
Boundaries of collaboration – the case of a temporary housing complex for refugees in Sweden
Integration of recent refugees is gaining much attention in the aftermath of the European ‘refugee crisis’ and collaboration is often seen by public officials as vital to promoting integration. At the same time, achieving successful collaboration in practice is regarded as difficult. In this paper we explore the challenges in detail by tracing how collaborative work unfolds in practice as ongoing, dispersed and collective boundary work. We draw o…
Organising labour market integration support for refugees in Austria and Sweden during the Covid-19 pandemic
This paper addresses the question of how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the labour market integration support (LMIS) organised for refugees in Austria and Sweden, and the potential consequences of the changes unfolding. LMIS for refugees is a complex phenomenon involving actors at different interwoven levels—the macro-national level, the meso-organisational level and the micro-individual level. However, the complexities and consequences of su…
Classifying difference in organizing, or how to create monsters
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the operation of classification mechanisms in organizational life, and how they construct the skills and knowledge of initially marginalized client groups. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on an ethnographically inspired case study of a Swedish labour market procedure, which was designed to validate the skills and knowledge of non-western immigrant job-seekers. Qualitative data…
Translating validation of prior learning in practice
This article contributes to the critical literature in the field of validation of prior learning by framing the idea of validation as a tool for integrating immigrants in the labour market as concerning issues of organizational change. Using a perspective from the sociology of translation, I examine how the idea of validation is translated in practice as part of a labour market project run by municipal and state organizations in Western Sweden fr…
Who’s giving us the answers?’ Interpreters and the validation of prior foreign learning
This paper critically discusses the role of the interpreter in the validation of the prior learning of recent immigrants arriving in Sweden by drawing on a perspective from the sociology of translation. The recent immigrants’ difficulties with speaking the local language is usually described as the main problem when it comes to validating their prior learning. As a result, the use of interpreters is proposed to facilitate the assessment process. …
