Terrorism and altruistic giving
We study how terrorist attacks targeting educational institutions affect private development aid through child sponsorship. Conceptually, terrorist events may increase sponsorship by signaling greater need or reduce it if affected communities are seen as less effective destinations to support. We combine global administrative data from Plan International on child sponsorship across 50 countries over the 2008-2018 period, aggregated at the Primary…

The impact of economic hardships on the intent to migrate
We examine the impact of various hardships on individual's consideration of migration as a coping mechanism. Previous studies fail to identify the microeconomic drivers of migration during crises, lumping all the potential consequences of a crisis into singular categories. We argue that migration is one of several coping strategies available to individuals and present an empirical model that motivates this proposition. Our approach also suggests …

The impact of natural disasters on migration
Increasingly, studies are examining whether the incidence of natural disasters influences household migration. This paper examines whether the severity of natural disasters is important for migration decisions in Vietnam, rather than just examining their occurrence. Data for a sample of 1,003 farm households from the Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey are examined for the period 2006–2008. A residual generated regressor approach is adopted …
Rainfall shocks and child health
This study examines the impacts of rainfall shocks on child health in Vietnam. It uses Young Lives data matched with province level climate data covering the period 1970–2014. Existing literature demonstrates that shocks can impact on child health by reducing household income or through the incidence of disease. This paper identifies and confirms a third mechanism: shocks impacting on parents’ mental health which, in turn, reduce children's physi…
Thinking Inside the Box
Using national representative household finance survey data covering more than 6200 Chinese households, we first construct a new multidimensional indicator for financial inclusion. Then we examine the effect of financial inclusion on household income. Our results elicit several findings. First, financial inclusion has a strong positive effect on household income. This effect can be found across all households with different levels of income. Seco…
Beyond enrolments
The second millennium development goal (MDG) is to achieve universal primary education and while developing countries have made good progress on primary-school enrolment rates, school attendance remains low. This paper addresses the determinants of school attendance using unique household survey data for two Melanesian economies rarely reported in the international literature: Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. There is a high degree of heterogeneity i…

Let's Get Messi? Top‐Scorer Productivity in the European Champions League

We study the determinants of top goal‐scorers’ productivity in the UEFA C hampions L eague. We find evidence of a concave relationship between age and productivity and uncover an inverted‐U relationship between performance and minutes played. Finally, we find a positive effect …
Government expenditure on education and enrolment rates in Indonesia in the new millennium
This note examines the likely impact of increased government expenditure on education in Indonesia resulting from new policy initiatives since the year 2000. These initiatives were consolidated in 2003 following the enactment of a new ‘Law on National Education System’. The effectiveness of this policy is questioned by comparing the expenditure and enrolment rates between Indonesia and other High Performing Asian Economies (HPAEs) – Singapore, Ho…
