Brave or brash? Exploring metastereotypes of voicers and nonvoicers in the workplace
Purpose While sex discrimination and race discrimination are prevalent in the workplace, a relatively low proportion of those who experience it choose to voice. This paper aims to investigate why individuals choose to voice or not voice discrimination by exploring the role of metastereotypes – beliefs about what others think about a group one belongs to – with respect to voicing or not voicing discrimination at work. Design/methodology/approach O…
Was that Zinger Supposed to Sting? The Interaction Between Humor Use and Abusive Supervision
We investigate how a leader's use of humor might change the perceptions of that leader's feedback, which then influences perceptions of leader-member exchange (LMX). Additionally, we explore how employee coping humor and situational attributions impact this relationship. A 2 (Leader Behavior: Abusive, Supportive) × 2 (Leader Humor: Present, Not Present) between-subjects experimental design was utilized ( N = 467). Participants read a vignette des…
Did they mean that? The effect of cyber incivility on older worker vitality, vigor, and turnover
Purpose Incivility can be used to target minority groups as a form of discrimination. This paper aimed to assess the extent to which older workers are particularly targeted by cyber incivility. Design/methodology/approach Study 1 used a cross-sectional design via an online crowdsourcing platform (N = 208). Study 2 (N = 227) employed a daily diary approach with an age diverse sample. Findings Age does not directly affect perceptions of cyber inciv…
Reactions from the Dark Side
Abusive supervision is a widely-studied phenomenon experienced by a multitude of workers across organizations and occupations. It has typically been conceptualized as a chronic phenomenon with negative outcomes. However, preliminary evidence indicates that conceptualizing abusive supervision as constant may not be accurate, and that its outcomes may vary temporally. This study uses a within-person approach to capture the dynamic nature of abusive…
Is Electronic Multitasking Always Viewed as a Counterproductive Meeting Behavior? Understanding the Nature of the Secondary Task
This project explored social evaluations of electronic multitasking during work meetings, including factors that may affect whether it is seen as a counterproductive meeting behavior. We used an experimental vignette design to test whether social evaluations (norm violating, agency, and communalism) of a hypothetical coworker's electronic multitasking differed by whether the secondary task was relevant to the meeting (Study 1; N = 274) or ambiguo…
