  • Enhancing Precision in Pisa's 2022 Creative Thinking Assessment

Open Access•Clievins Selva, Jörg-Henrik Heine et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Creative Behavior•2026

Large‐scale assessments often involve measurements with missing data where for a given student all items of a construct can be missing by design. In such circumstances, researchers are required to make methodological decisions in secondary analysis. A common approach is the use of plausible value estimation, which is designed for population‐level inference and thus works well for comparing groups. However, it is less suited to item‐ or factor‐lev…

  • The role of parental attitudes, home literacy environment, and migration background in preschool children's emergent literacy skills

    Open Access•María Valcárcel Jiménez, Jörg-Henrik Heine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Developmental…•2025•References: 65

Developing proficient literacy skills is important for school success. This study examined the link between parental attitudes towards reading and preschool children's emergent literacy skills in German, focusing on children with and without migration background. It explored whether the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) mediated this relation while controlling for child age, sex, cognitive skills, and family socioeconomic status. The study involved…

  • Socially Jetlagged and Late for School

    Jörg-Henrik Heine, Christine Sälzer•ARTICLE•European Education•2023•References: 61

This paper uses data from PISA 2018 in Germany to explore how the students'chronotype (known as larks and owls) and their academic achievement is related to truancy. We used an adapted version of the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) to measure the students' chronotype. The results demonstrate a correlation between the students' social jet lag, student achievement, and truancy. Finally, we discuss the potential inclusion of chronotypes as a …

  • What Matters for Boys Does Not Necessarily Matter for Girls

Open Access•Scott Hofer, Frank Reinhold et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

While math performance does not seem to differ systematically between males and females, it is one of the subjects that is consistently perceived as “male” with girls regularly reporting lower levels of motivation and less positive attitudes than boys. This study aimed to uncover gender-specific relations between perceived self-determination, engagement, and performance in school mathematics that might help to better understand this discrepancy. …

  • Supporting student motivation in class

    Open Access•Anna Heinle, Anja Schiepe-Tiska et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissensch…•2022

Fostering student motivation is an important educational goal. However, motivation in the classrooms is rather heterogeneous, particularly in mathematics and physics. This study examines the potential of (textbook) tasks to promote student motivation. Based on self-determination theory (SDT) and theory of interest , a low-inference coding scheme was developed and validated by applying the framework of item response theory (IRT) to assess the moti…

  • Measuring mathematics competence in international and national large scale assessments

Open Access•Timo Ehmke, Ann-Katrin van den Ham et al.•ARTICLE•Studies In Educational Evaluation•2020

This study examines a linkage between the international mathematics scale of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2012) and the mathematics assessment taken from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The linking was realized by a separate linking study that uses a single group design. The sample consists of n = 1,270 9th graders from 78 German secondary schools. The equipercentile linking leads to close descripti…
