North Korean Human Rights: Activists and Networks
The evidentiary weight of North Korean defectors' testimony depicting crimes against humanity has drawn considerable attention from the international community in recent years. Despite the attention to North Korean human rights, what remains unexamined is the rise of the transnational advocacy network, which drew attention to the issue in the first place. Andrew Yeo and Danielle Chubb explore the 'hard case' that is North Korea and challenge exis…
Living in an Age of Mistrust: An Interdisciplinary Study of Declining Trust and How to Get It Back
Realism, critical theory, and the politics of peace and security: Lessons from anti-base protests on Jeju Island
Drawing on insights from International Relations and social movement theories, I explore anti-base protests on Jeju Island and the ensuing politics of peace. I find that the clash between activists and policymakers is fundamentally tied to different views regarding the legitimacy of state actions on security policy and whether actors see states or people as the primary object of security. Living in an Age of Mistrust
Trust is a concept familiar to most. Whether we are cognizant of it or not, we experience it on a daily basis. Yet trust is quickly eroding in civic and political life. Americans' trust in their government has reached all-time lows. The political and social consequences of this decline in trust are profound. What are the foundations of trust? What explains its apparent decline in society? Is there a way forward for rebuilding trust in our leaders…

Overlapping regionalism in East Asia: Determinants and potential effects
Once considered severely under-institutionalized, East Asia has experienced a rapid process of institution-building since the end of the Cold War resulting in a significant degree of organizational overlap, both in membership and mandate. This paper examines the drivers and potential effects of institutional overlap in East Asia. It argues that the informal nature of Asian institutions coupled with competing visions of regionalism among member st…
Business as usual: The role of norms in alliance management
How do allies successfully manage their alliance partnership in times of political crisis? We argue that the procedural norm of political contestation and the substantive norm of security consensus set the parameters for non-detrimental disagreement among democratic alliance partners. Rather than interpreting sharp disagreements with the US as signs of soft-balancing or alliance decline, we explain the seeming contradictions in alliance behavior …
Alleviating Misery: The Politics of North Korean Human Rights in U.S. Foreign Policy
IntroductionNorth Koreans suffer from human rights abuses at the hands of the Kim regime. Despite consensus regarding the serious nature of abuses, addressing (much less resolving) these issues has proven to be difficult. Complicating matters further, the problem of North Korean human rights is embedded in the context of perpetual nuclear and humanitarian crises. This has stimulated ethical debates and much soul-searching among policymakers, aid …
