  • All but the Death Penalty

    Open Access•Minju Kwon•ARTICLE•Feminist Legal Studies•2026

How did unrecognised gender biases impact the codification of international humanitarian law (IHL)? While recent studies on IHL have highlighted historical lawmaking processes, little research has examined gender biases behind the codification of the “Protection of Women” in the Geneva Conventions and additional protocols. This study examines gender biases and state interests reflected in the codification process by focusing on Article 76§3 of th…

    Open Access•Minju Kwon•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•2025•References: 48

This article revisits colonial women’s contributions to constituting a new standard of civilization during the interwar period with a focus on fashion, specifically Korean women’s short hair. Existing scholarship on the standard of civilization has paid little attention to the agency of colonial women. Focusing on everyday politics through fashion, I argue that gendered actors, especially colonial women, constituted the standard of civilization t…

  • Ontological complexity of interpolity orders

    Open Access•Inho Choi, Minju Kwon•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•2025•References: 56

Existing multiculturalist studies of the Qing order emphasized diverse cultural representations of a single imperial reality, lacking an understanding of multiple realities experienced by peripheral participants. Our analysis reveals the ontological complexity—rather than cultural diversity—of the Qing order, in which mult…

  • Relatively Unworthy Victims? Middle-Aged Women as Rape Survivors

    Open Access•Minju Kwon, Ya Su•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2024•References: 8

This study examines how the age of female survivors impacts public perceptions of rape in China. In our online survey experiment, participants consider rape as less serious when the survivor is a middle-aged woman compared to other groups of women (younger, older, or age unknown). Participants also request shorter sentencing when the survivor is a middle-aged woman than a younger woman. In China, moral codes surrounding chastity and respect for e…
