It’s normal, you just gotta get used to it.” Professional, institutional and organisational challenges for social work in residential care
This article explores institutional, organisational and professional challenges facing social work in the context of residential childcare. Starting from the experiential knowledge of one youth as an exemplary case, we examine representations of systemic challenges as they unfold in her story. Using her knowledge as point of departure, the article shows how social workers in residential care units tend to be placed in a squeeze between institutio…
Logistics of care: Trust-reform and self-managing teams in municipal home care services
The central idea in trust-reform is to improve service delivery by granting professional autonomy and acknowledging the experiential knowledge of professionals. In this article, we study trust-reform bottom-up from the perspective of frontline care workers. Our aim is to discuss the challenges for care work and care workers who have been organised in self-managing teams, paying particular attention to the organising of the daily work in the teams…
Reputation crisis management and the state: Theorising containment as diplomatic mode
This article theorises containment as a diplomatic response mode for states when faced with potentially harmful attacks on their international identity and reputation. Despite widespread agreement in International Relations (IR) scholarship that identities matter in the context of state security, studies of crisis management have paid little attention to ontological security crises. Scholarly literature on public diplomacy has concerned itself ma…
Should we take their children? Caseworkers’ negotiations of ‘good enough’ care for children living with high-conflict parents
Few studies have explored caseworkers’ perspectives on children’s safety and emotional wellbeing in high-conflict families. Based on focus group and individual interviews with 31 Norwegian child protection services staff, this research concentrated on caseworkers’ assessments when they worry about the intensity of interparental conflicts and their ability to identify the right thresholds for interventions. While the participants agree that excess…

Care parading as service: Negotiating recognition and equality in user‐controlled personal assistance
This article addresses aspects of the relationship between disabled people and their personal assistants within the user‐controlled personal assistance programme in Norway (BPA — brukerstyrt personlig assistanse). Within this programme, a disabled person and her/his personal assistant (PA) form a working relationship in which the disabled person functions as a supervisor for her/his PA. The purpose of the programme is to enable the supervisor to …
A Dangerous Subject: The Fashion Model and the Beauty/Narcissism Double Bind
In the wake of modernity, women's sexuality was positioned in a way that created a beauty/narcissism double bind that is still with us today. My concern in this article is that the subject position of “fashion model” serves as a constant reminder of this split, which is directed at all women and weakens the generalized woman's political agency. Fashion models themselves experience harassment and humiliation as well as pleasure and desire in their…
Uses of the Self: Two Ways of Thinking about Scholarly Situatedness and Method
If the scholarly self is irretrievably tied to the world, then self-situating is a fruitful source of data production. The researcher becomes a producer, as opposed to a collector, of data. This how-to paper identifies three analytical stages where such self-situating takes place. Pre-field; there is autobiographical situating; in-field, there is field situating, and post-field, there is textual situating. Each of these stages are presented in te…
