The tripartite structure of critical international theory
The breakdown of liberal hegemony, the rise of the New Right, and the violent realignment of world order have been accompanied by a retreat from traditional humanist concerns in critical international theory, including emancipation, political subjectivity, social totality, universal history, and the anticipatory-utopian dimension of critique. Scholars have identified numerous shortcomings in first-generation and contemporary critical Internationa…
Myanmar’s redemptive revolution: Constituent power and the struggle for sovereignty in the Nwe Oo (Spring) Revolution
Revolutions are thoroughly international phenomena that have shaped world-historical development, international orders and political modernity. Recent scholarship foregrounds the consequences of their constitutional politics for world affairs, emancipatory ethos and revolutionaries’ strategic agency, and has raised concerns about the prospects of subaltern self-emancipation in the wake of the Arab Spring. This article presents a study of Myanmar’…
The economic corridors paradigm as extractivism: Four theses for a historical materialist framework
Economic corridors are under construction across the planet. Trillions of dollars are being spent and they will have significant implications for international politics and, ultimately, world order. To rectify this, the RTG must reform national laws and policies that harm the UL, and civil society must hold them accountable. Several recommendations are offered to achieve a better future for the Urak Lawoi
Global Trafficking Prevalence Data Advances the Fight against Trafficking in Persons
We defend the proposition that global trafficking prevalence data—when gathered using validated methods and presented with sufficient detail on study design and data analysis—can advance the fight against trafficking in persons. Space does not allow us to engage in a full review and critique of existing data and methodologies, but we subscribe to the view that the field in general suffers from ‘“epidemiological anaemia”—lack of primary data colle…
