Queer theory at the end of the world: What’s the point?
Patrick J. VernonThe conversation in this forum stemmed originally from a roundtable discussion at the 2025 annual convention of the International Studies Association in Chicago, Illinois, United S...
Desire Beyond Value: On Reproduction, Queerness, and (Anti-) Fascism
This paper argues that both fascist and queer politics are animated by the erotics of transgression: the pleasure that derives from the act of violating normative boundaries concerning gender, sexuality, and the body. Yet while fascism eroticises the restoration of hierarchies of human value, queerness eroticises the destruction of those hierarchical classifications. Against economistic and orthodox psychoanalytic accounts, this paper argues that…
Eros and Empire: The Transnational Struggle for Sexual Freedom in the United States
The history of queer politics in the United States since 1968 is commonly narrated as either a progressive campaign for state recognition or as a subcultural rejection of prevailing gender norms. But these accounts miss the true scale of queer politics in the post-war era. By centering transnational relations, practices, and infrastructures in the history of sexual rebellion, Eros and Empire provides an alternative view of US-based struggles for …
Abstractions in International Relations: On the Mystification of Trans, Queer, and Subaltern Life in Critical Knowledge Production
This paper identifies a common process of mystification within academic knowledge production today: the treatment of subordinated groups as mere metaphors or rhetorical figures for academic theorizing. We witness it when academics ask what trans might teach us about transnationality, when we are invited to reflect on what might be queer about modern warfare, or when nation-states are described as subaltern. Trans, queer, and subaltern populations…
The Dialectic of the International: Elaborating the Historical Materialism of the Gay Liberationists
What is the relation between sexuality and the international? The literature on sexuality within international studies demonstrates that a full appreciation of contemporary transformations of sexuality across the globe requires an interrogation of the divisions—West/non-West, North/South, or core/periphery—that characterize our view of the international. While many have studied how the transnational circulation of sexual discourses troubles such …
