Forgotten Variables and Older Men in Custody: Negative Childhood Events, Forgiveness, and Religiosity
The study tested a mediational model linking negative childhood events through forgiveness of self and social support to religiosity using data from a convenience sample of 261 men aged 45–82 years residing behind prison walls. The Developmental Model of Adaptation provided the study's conceptual model for investigating the associations among the study variables. The study tested a mediational model linking the distal past (negative childhood eve…
Testing a portion of the Oklahoma aging inmate forgiveness model
The study tested a portion of the Oklahoma Aging Inmate Forgiveness Model predicting religiosity would be positively and significantly associated with the mediator, forgiveness (self, other, and situation), and the mental health outcome, valuation of life. Further, the study asked, “Does crime type moderate the relationships in the model?” Cross-sectional data from 249 older male inmates affirmed that religiosity and forgiveness matters for parti…
The unique influence of attachment to god on forgiveness among incarcerated males
Religious constructs associated with forgiveness are understudied among incarcerated males. Attachment and forgiveness theory supported hypotheses that attachment to God would uniquely influence forgiveness, controlling for other biopsychosocial resources in regression modeling. Results, utilizing data collected from 261 male prison inmates, ages 45 to 82, demonstrated that each of three blocks of predictors explained significant amounts of varia…
Testing a Model of Universal Prevention Effects on Adolescent Relationships and Marijuana Use as Pathways to Young Adult Outcomes
Experience of Parental Marital Dissolution Earlier in Life and the Disposition to Forgive Among Older Violent and Non-Violent Prisoners
The purpose of this study was to examine differences in self-reported dispositional forgiveness types among older male prison inmates who experienced parental separation/divorce earlier in life. Participants included a sample of N = 261 incarcerated men, aged 45 and older, residing in state-managed prisons in Oklahoma. IBM/SPSS 22.0 was used to examine mean differences across forgiveness of self, situation, and others. Significant mean difference…
