Factors Affecting Environmentally Responsible Behaviors in the Use of Energy‐efficient Lighting in the Home
During the last decade, lighting has become energy efficient across most sectors in the United States. However, the residential sector shows the least efficiency in lighting because of the use of incandescent lighting. To understand the reason for the slow growth in the adoption of energy‐efficient residential lighting, this study identified factors influencing the purchase of energy‐efficient lighting products, the willingness to pay more for en…
Perceived Cultural Housing Differences and Residential Satisfaction
A sojourner is an individual who visits or lives in another country for a brief period with no intention of permanently remaining in the host country. Based on a model by Marans and Rodgers (Metropolitan America in Contemporary Perspective, 1975, 299), sojourners' residential satisfaction is hypothesized to be dependent on their perception of particular housing aspects, which is affected by their personal characteristics. The purpose of this stud…
Exploring the Impact of Housing Deficits on Housing Satisfaction for Temporary Korean Migrants
This study expands the application of the Morris and Winter (1978) housing adjustment theory to study housing satisfaction of a temporary migrant population. The proposed empirical model hypothesized the effects of household characteristics and housing deficits on housing satisfaction. The model was tested with a sample of 225 Korean temporary migrants in the U.S. Findings indicated that housing deficits were significant mediators between househo…
Housing Satisfaction and Quality of Life Among Temporary residents in the United States
This study examined the factors that affect satisfaction with housing and quality of life among Korean temporary residents in the U.S. The proposed model was tested with a sample of 235 Koreans in the Lansing area of Michigan in the U.S. Findings indicated that housing significantly contributes to temporary residents' quality of life. The results also revealed that housing satisfaction was not only a strong predictor of quality of life but also t…
Desired and Achieved Privacy and Interaction in Multigenerational Homes
It is imperative that the home environment functionally support the way families interact in response to the social changes of an elder parent moving in with an adult child while similarly accommodating the privacy of the individual family members. Privacy and the interactions that occur with family members in the home impact the use and functionality of the environment. The purpose of this study was to explore home environments, specifically loo…
Retail Store Lighting for Elderly Consumers
The study presents an investigation of the influence of the color of light on readability by figure to background value contrast, color perception, and overall room‐light estimation for elderly consumers in an experimental setting representing a retail store. A factorial design with repeated measures was used to identify the impact of three independent variables: (a) lamp color temperatures, (b) lamp color‐rendering properties, and (c) age of the…
