Residents’ perspectives of housing needs in an urban neighborhood
The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to explore housing characteristics valued and needed by residents of a Midwestern urban neighborhood in the United States. This exploratory study was conducted to assess information about selected green technologies used in affordable multifamily housing in Minnesota to identify if they were perceived to operate as intended and their influences on residents’ well-being. This mixed-methods study used structured, in-depth interviews to collect data that was analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively to explore the long-term housing patterns experienced by low-income families and the ways in which vouchers affect these patterns. Using a life-course theoretical framework and an event history approach, information on past housing, employment, and life circumstances was collected from 30 participants, 17 who had…

The purpose of this research was to explore and explain the role housing plays in rural community vitality. Community vitality refers to economic strength and social well-being. In spring 2002 we collected primary interview data from informants in 134 small rural communities in nine north-central states and identified related secondary data from the U.S. census.
