Staging Buenos Aires: Theater, Society, and Politics in Argentina, 1860–1920. By Kristen L. McCleary
Globalization and Glocalization in the History of Chinese Medicine
The globalization of Chinese medicine, forged through successive waves of migration, cultural exchanges, and economic imperatives, constitutes a nuanced and intricate process with historical roots extending over millennia. It stands as the culmination of interconnected historical events that reverberated beyond the confines of China, emerging as a phenomenon characterized by the adjustment of Chinese medical theories, clinical practices, and mate…
On the Present and the Past of Pandemics
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a multitude of narratives saturated the print, audiovisual, and electronic media. Improvised, uninformed, apocalyptic and voluntarist approaches abounded. These notes – written during the pandemic and delivered in the conference series – address the proliferation of such discourses, emphasizing a series of issues. First, the widespread ignorance about the history of epidemics. Then, the inability to deal with the unc…
Desirable and undesirable migrants. Disease, eugenics, and discourses in modern Buenos Aires
Immigration was a central feature in the making of modern Buenos Aires. Elites celebrated the massive presence of immigrants but also voiced concerns about the arrival of certain groups perceived as potentially dangerous to the making of a healthy, modern “Argentine race.”Eugenic discourses rationalized those concerns around the idea of desirable and undesirable immigrants. People with tuberculosis were part of the latter. These discourses, howev…

Global Anti-Vice Activism, 1890–1950: Fighting Drinks, Drugs, and 'Immorality'
Vice was one of the primary shared interests of the global community at the turn of the twentieth century. Anti-vice activists worked to combat noxious substances such as alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, and 'immoral' sexual activities such as prostitution. Nearly all of these activists approached the issue of vice by expressing worries about the body, its physical health, and functionality. By situating anti-vice politics in their broader historic…

Washington y Ginebra llegan a Buenos Aires: Notas Sobre La Historia Del Hábito De Fumar Y Su Medicalización

The Aids Pandemic in Latin America
In the last 20 years the growing literature about AIDS in contemporary world history has taken three main forms: as an exercise in re-creating the past for its own sake, indicating how complex are the relations among disease, history, and society; as policy analysis aiming at informing the present with the past; and as narratives aiming at influencing future public health policy. The AIDS Pandemic in Latin America has a little bit of all these an…
Saberes, terapias y prácticas médicas en Argentina (1750-1910)
This is a convincing example of the possibilities and challenges of writing on issues of health and disease from a social and cultural perspective. In a field that continues to produce more and more monographic works, Saberes, terapias y prácticas delves into the complex zone of medical pluralism. Di Liscia works with a broad definition of medicine—not only scientific and academic discourses, practices, and beliefs, but also those that originate …
Traditional histories of medicine used to be, and in large part still are, a territory cultivated by doctors interested in the past, who write biographies of famous physicians and effective treatments. Beyond their specific contributions, these histories appear to have attempted to reconstruct the “inevitable progress” generated by university-certified medicine, to unify the past of an increasingly specialized profession, and to emphasize a certa…
Subjects of Crisis: Race and Gender as Disease in Latin America
This book discusses the different ways in which intellectual elites in Latin America came to believe that the region and its population were in a state of constant crisis. According to Trigo, in their efforts to govern, elites had to know, control, discipline and normalize the social body. And in so doing, they not only perceived sexual and racial differences as a threat to the stability of their societies but also engaged themselves in efforts a…
