Acculturation in relation to the acquisition of a second language
Learners who begin to acquire a second language (L2) in a naturalistic environment after puberty are thought to be constrained by biological age factors and to have greater difficulty obtaining native-like L2. However, the extant literature suggests that L2 acquisition may be positively affected by post-maturational factors, such as acculturation. This exploratory study examined the relationship between acculturation and L2 acquisition on Chinese…
Evidence for Differentiating Between Anxiety and Depression in Turkish College Students
The relationship between the constructs of depression and anxiety were examined with 443 Turkish college students. Significant correlations were found. Factor analyses computed with state and trait anxiety, as defined as the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, 1970) and depression, as defined as the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; Beck & Steer, 1993) supported the notion that anxiety and depression may be t…
Relation between Measures of Critical Thinking and Learning Styles
This study investigated differences and relationships between critical thinking and learning styles for 184 students majoring in Elementary Education, Health and Physical Education, Psychology and Special Education, and Secondary and Higher Education. Analyses showed some significant differences among groups in learning style and critical thinking and relationships between the variables studied
Depression and Acculturation in Mexican-American Women
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between depression and acculturation in Mexican-American women. For this purpose, two samples of 67 women from social service agencies in Kansas City and 57 college women from South Texas were examined. Pearson product-moment correlations of scores on depression and acculturation suggested a nonsignificant association (-.02) for the South Texas sample, but a low negative significant relati…
Effects of Trait Anxiety and the Scamper Technique on Creative Thinking of Intellectually Gifted Students
This work assessed the effect of trait anxiety (measured on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and the Scamper technique on figural creative thinking, measured by the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. An analysis of covariance with 52 gifted students in a summer camp gave no significant main effect of treatment for trait anxiety, or their interaction. Scamper may not effectively improve figural creativity and anxiety may not influence figural …
Creative Self-Perceptions of Mexican-American Children
Responses from 96 ( M age: 11-yr.-old) Mexican-American children, 55 boys and 41 girls in Grades 3 to 8, on Something About Myself from the Khatena-Torrance Creative Perception Inventory showed they believed themselves to be talented in many different areas and to use original ideas to solve problems as well as not take for granted what they are told, but do not participate in musical or dramatic expressions
Learning Style, Repeated Stimuli, and Originality in Intellectually Gifted Adolescents
This study assessed differences in originality between groups with different learning styles as a function of repeated presentations of stimuli. Subjects were 104 gifted adolescents who were administered a measure of originality (Thinking Creatively with Sounds and Words) and Your Style of Learning and Thinking, a measure of learning style. Analysis indicated significant differences in originality for learning styles, for sounds, for presentation…
Effects of the Scamper Technique on Anxiety and Creative Thinking of Intellectually Gifted Students
This study assessed the effect of the Scamper technique on creative thinking and trait-anxiety of 27 junior high students. Effect size was large for flexibility and medium for trait anxiety which suggests Scamper may be useful to improve flexibility and reduce trait-anxiety
Self-Estimates of Adaptors and Innovators on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory
This study examined the relationship between Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory total scores and self-estimates of the inventory scores to assess how accurately individuals can predict their adaptor or innovator status. Analysis indicated that 42 of 66 students (26 men, 40 women) classified themselves correctly as either adaptors or innovators, which was significant as were the Pearson correlations between actual and self-estimates of total sco…
Effects of Training Gifted Children in Creative Imagination on “Your Style of Learning and Thinking”
The purpose of this study is to describe the effect of brief training of students in use of creative imagination on a measure of hemispheric learning style. 73 students were randomly assigned to control and training groups based on their style. The latter group received 2 hr. of training in use of creative imagination. Nonsignificant difference in learning style between the two groups suggests the short duration of training did not affect hemisph…
Relationship of Originality to Kirton's Scale for Innovators and Adaptors
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between originality and Kirton's scale for innovators and adaptors. Kirton's scale measures the way a person solves problems or style, while creativity has been described as level or the efficiency in solving problems. Kirton's 1976 theory states the two variables should not be related; however, careful reading of the manuals of both tests indicates innovators and creative individuals have …
Comparison of Mexican and Mexican American College Students on the Spanish (American) Version of the Depression Adjective Check List
To study the utility of the Spanish (American) version of the Depression Adjective Check Lists with a Mexican sample, comparisons of means and reliability of Mexican American and Mexican samples were conducted. No significant differences were found on lists E, F, and G for the two samples. Reliability (alternate form, internal consistency, and split-half) were high and very similar. Significant concurrent validity was found in the Mexican sample …
