Personality Disorders and Psychological Functioning Among Latina Women with Eating Disorders
Little is known about personality disorders (PD) and comorbidities among Latinas with eating disorders (ED). The dysregulation and chronicity of PDs can complicate and augment the symptomatology of EDs. This set of analyses provides a preliminary examination of PD and psychopathology in a sample of Latina women with ED. Participants (N = 34) were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Eating Diso…
Culturally adapted cognitive behavioral guided self-help for binge eating
Objective was to test feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral self-help program to treat binge eating and related problems in Mexican Americans. Participants were 31 women recruited from the Los Angeles area and diagnosed with binge eating disorder, recurrent binge eating, or bulimia nervosa. Participants completed a culturally adapted version of a CBT-based self-help program with 8 guidance sessions over…
Impact of Asian American mothers’ feeding beliefs and practices on child obesity in a diverse community sample
Asian Americans suffer from childhood obesity yet are a particularly understudied population. Objective was to examine the impact of ethnicity on child feeding practices believed to be associated with childhood obesity in a community sample of mothers and their children. Prior research with White samples indicates a positive relationship between parental overcontrol of child feeding and child adiposity. Participants were 425 mothers (66 Asian/Asi…
Acculturation and Eating Disorders in a Mexican American Community Sample
Our purpose was to investigate acculturation and eating disorders by examining the role of ethnic identity and by utilizing a bidimensional perspective toward two cultures. We predicted that orientation toward European American culture and lower ethnic identity would be positively associated with eating disorders. Participants were 188 Mexican American women recruited from the community (79 with eating disorders and 109 control women). The Struct…
Sexual Abuse and Eating Disorders in a Community Sample of Mexican American Women
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sexual abuse and eating disorders in a voluntary community sample of Mexican American women. Eighty eating disorder cases were compared to 110 healthy controls on presence of sexual abuse and on characteristics of the abuse. The Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text revision) and the Eating Disorder Examination wer…
Etiology of Eating Disorders in Women
Eating disorders have been studied extensively over the past several decades, yet research of their etiology has lagged behind treatment outcome research. This article reviews the challenges inherent in this research. It illustrates the epidemiologic designs that have been used to test risk factor hypotheses and describes the major studies designed to answer the question of what causes eating disorders. It points to significant gaps in knowledge,…
Disordered Eating, Acculturation, and Treatment-Seeking in a Community Sample of Hispanic, Asian, Black, and White Women
The purpose of this study was to examine disordered eating, acculturation, and treatment-seeking in a community sample of Hispanic, Asian, Black, and White women. Participants were 118 women with disordered eating (49 Hispanic, 21 Asian, 23 Black, and 25 White) and 118 healthy controls.
