Late HIV detection among adult males in Los Angeles County, 2000–2004
We analyzed HIV surveillance data on white, black, and Latino males diagnosed with HIV between 2000 and 2004 in Los Angeles County (LAC) to identify associations between individual- and community-level factors and late HIV detection by race/ethnicity. We defined late HIV detection as an AIDS diagnosis within 6 months of HIV diagnosis. We conducted multilevel analysis to determine individual- and community-level risk factors associated with late H…
The Use of Female Commercial Sex Workers’ Services by Latino Day Laborers
This article reports the characteristics of Latino day laborers who have sex with female commercial sex workers (CSWs). A sample of 450 day laborers in Los Angeles was used. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the association of independent variables with the likelihood of having sex with a CSW. Overall, 26% of the 450 day laborers reported having had sex with a CSW in the previous 12 months. A lower likelihood of having sex wi…

This study sought to examine the relationship between perceived social support and perceived HIV stigma among HIV-positive African America…

We interviewed 76 percent of 4042 patients selected from among the patients receiving care from…
The African‐American Health Project (Aahp)
The AAHP investigated the neurobehavioral and psychosocial sequelae of HIV-1 and substance use in urban African American men. A community resident sample of 502 African American men stratified by HIV-1 serostatus, drug use and sexual orientation were recruited. A comprehensive battery of measures of neurobehavioral and health status, lifestyle and psychosocial characteristics were administered to all participants, and a stratified sub-sample of 1…
Substance use and psychopathology in African American men at risk for HIV infection
Substance use and psychopathology in African American men at risk for HIV infection
Recent epidemiologic surveys of the prevalence of and primary risk factors for psychiatric morbidity suggest that socioeconomic status, age, ethnicity, and gender represent significant risk factors for both primary psychiatric and substance use disorders. Further, evidence of concurrent disorders continues to mount, particularly among inpatients. The present study is designed to address the association between heavy substance use and major mental…
