Reshaping Belonging: National Identity Change in Post-Referendum Britain
National identity is usually treated as a stable driver of political behaviour, yet we know little about whether it responds to major political events. We examine how two pivotal electoral events – the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum and the 2016 EU Referendum – were associated with changes in citizens’ sense of national belonging. Using the 2014–2025 British Election Study Internet Panel, we show that both referendums precipitated signific…
The Brexit realignment amid electoral volatility: The role of party blocs in the 2024 General Election
Brexit accelerated the long-term realignment of how demographic groups vote in Britain. However, Europe is no longer salient to voters, support for the pro-Brexit Conservatives has collapsed, and the 2024 UK General Election was the most volatile on record. So, did the Brexit realignment persist? We address this question by examining the relationship between Brexit preferences and demographic groups with vote choice. We find that the demographic …

Making the Case for More Politicians: A Survey Experiment to Investigate Public Attitudes to an Expanded Welsh Parliament
In 2022, the Welsh Government announced plans to increase the size of the Welsh Parliament/Senedd Cymru, a culmination of two decades of elite-level argument over whether more members should parallel the institution’s growing suite of legislative and fiscal powers. While an expanded legislature may improve the Senedd’s capacity to scrutinise the executive, opposition has focused on increased costs that detract from core public spending. Using a n…
Diverging electoral fortunes in Scotland and Wales: National identities, national interests, and voting behavior
Despite an extraordinary degree of political turbulence in the UK, the 2021 Scottish and Welsh election results were remarkably similar to those recorded at the previous elections in 2016. While this period spanned the 2016 EU referendum, Britain’s exit from the EU, and the coronavirus pandemic, these upheavals appear to have had little impact on devolved election results. From a comparative perspective, however, such continuity only underlines t…
Scrutinizing Relative Territorial Identity Measures
Territorial politics research often emphasizes the importance of relative state/substate identities. Conventionally, researchers capture relative national identity through the Linz-Moreno question, but previous research demonstrates the limitations of this measure. Many researchers now use Relative Territorial Identity (RTI) as an alternative. However, the potential limitations of this approach are yet to be explored. I provide that examination h…

A Cross-Sectional View of Fear of Death and Dying Among Skydivers
The literature lacks a consistent pattern on the relationship between attitudes toward death and dying across occupations and recreational pursuits. The present cross-sectional study categorized a group of individuals engaging in a high-risk recreational activity (i.e., skydivers) on the basis of experience and classified them into student, intermediate, and experts. There were more negative attitudes of death and dying among student skydivers co…
Body Image and Celebrity Worship
We surveyed college students to determine the relationship between body image and celebrity admiration. We administered the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS), the Self-Objectification Questionnaire (SOQ), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT), and a slightly modified version of the (ESS,) to 279 participants from three universities and one college. We hypothesized that, as the tendency to worship celebrities increased, so would self-objectification, enjoy…
Online Escorts: The Influence of Advertised Sexual Orientation
This study compared women who advertised on an online escort website and marketed themselves as either bisexual or heterosexual. The analyses showed that advertised sexual orientation, age, weight, and photographs depicting buttock nudity were related to rates charged by escorts. A series of moderator analyses were conducted that showed that advertised sexual orientation moderated the effect of age and weight: The effects were more pronounced for…
Attitudes Toward Dying and Death: A Comparison of Recreational Groups among Older Men
Previous research reports examining the relationship between attitudes toward dying, death, and involvement in death-related occupations have provided mixed findings as no clear pattern has been identified. Examination of the relationship between attitudes toward dying, death, and recreational activity has not received much attention. The current study examined attitudes toward dying and death of older men categorized into four groups defined by …
Sexual Behaviors and Attitudes, Quality of Life, and Drug Use: A Comparison Between Bisexual and Heterosexual Pornography Actresses
This study compared the self-reports of 118 bisexual and 58 heterosexual pornography actresses on sexual behaviors and attitudes, quality of life, and alcohol and drug use. Compared with their heterosexual peers, bisexual porn actresses had sex at an earlier age, had more sexual partners, liked sex more, reported more positive feelings and higher levels of spirituality, and were more likely to have used at least three different types of drugs in …
Characteristics of Pornography Film Actors: Self-Report versus Perceptions of College Students
The Temporal Stability of the Tendency to Worship Celebrities
This study examined the test-retest and internal reliability of a scale used to measure celebrity worship. We administered the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) and several related items on two different occasions approximately 3 months apart to 248 participants from three universities and one college. We hypothesized that attitudes about celebrities would remain fairly stable over time. Results confirmed the hypothesis and were discussed in relatio…
Why Become a Pornography Actress
There is very limited research on women who perform in adult films. The current study used a discovery-oriented qualitative methodology to examine the responses of 176 female actresses in the adult entertainment industry to questions regarding the reasons for becoming involved in the pornography industry, as well as their likes and dislikes of the work. The most frequent reasons for joining the industry included money, sex, and attention. Only on…
A Comparison of Sexual Behaviors and Attitudes, Self-Esteem, Quality of Life, and Drug Use Among Pornography Actors and a Matched Sample
The present study compared the self-reports of 105 porn actors to a sample of men matched on age, ethnicity, and marital status. Comparisons were conducted on sexual behaviors and attitudes, self-esteem, quality of life, and drug use. Porn actors' first sex was at an earlier age, they had more sexual partners and a higher enjoyment of sex, they were more concerned about catching a sexually transmitted disease, and they were less likely to use a c…
Pornography Actresses: An Assessment of the Damaged Goods Hypothesis
The damaged goods hypothesis posits that female performers in the adult entertainment industry have higher rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), psychological problems, and drug use compared to the typical woman. The present study compared the self-reports of 177 porn actresses to a sample of women matched on age, ethnicity, and marital status. Comparisons were conducted on sexual behaviors and attitudes, self-esteem, quality of life, and drug u…
Hypermnesia for Prose
Hypermnesia is an improvement in memory that occurs with repeated testing. In the present experiment, hypermnesia was examined with prose materials. Participants were presented with either a fairy tale or an expository passage, followed by 3 free-recall tests. Participants used 1 of 2 encoding strategies (the relational or item-specific processing conditions) to process the material, or they simply read the material (the read-only condition). Rec…
The Development and Validation of a Simpatia Scale for Hispanics Entering Drug Treatment
A 17-item simpatia scale was developedfor use with Hispanic substance abusers using confirmatoryfactoranalytic techniques in a sample of 144 daily opioid users. The overall scale had good internal consistency and demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity. The simpatia scale was constructed to examine social attributes reflecting agreeableness, respect of others, and politeness. The Agreeableness subscale addressed issues related to agreei…
Formal Structure and Communication: An Examination of Two Models
Previous theory and research in the area of large-scale organizations have suggested that there is a relationship between the organizational chart and social behavior within the organization. The prime concern of this study was to determine the degree of relationship between the formal system's chart and communication within the organization. In order to examine this supposition two statistical models were developed: (1) dealing with the organiza…
