Teacher recruitment for high school students
A review of relevant literature led to the construction of an instrument designed to measure the interest of high school students in pursuing a career in teaching and identify the factors that contribute to adolescents' consideration of teaching as their career, based on Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. The psychometric properties of this instrument, the Erikson Teaching Identity Questionnaire (ETIQ), were assessed using a convenienc…
Finding tomorrow’ teachers
Teacher shortages increase yearly while interest in the teaching profession seems to be at an all-time low. Policymakers are again seeing value in high school “grow your own” (GYO) teacher programs as a source of future teacher talent. Against the backdrop of career development models for teaching, we developed an instrument based on specific practices in the GYO literature and applied the instrument to review school district applications selecte…
Measuring Teacher Buy-in for the Texas Pay-for-Performance Program
Teacher buy-in is a critical component for the success of any educational reform, especially one involving evaluation and compensation. We report on an instrument developed to measure teacher buy-in for district-developed designation plans associated with a state pay-for-performance (PFP) program, and teacher responses. We used modern test theory to investigate the instrument’s psychometric properties, a procedure often missing from research repo…
Teacher Possible Selves
Researchers see the value of future-oriented thinking for teacher development. Inthis study, ten teacher candidates (Elementary = 1; Middle-level = 2; Secondary = 6; All-level = 1) from a large university in the southwestern United States were interviewed about their teacher “possible selves,” and the regulative role these had on learning-to-teach behaviors. We found that all participants regulated behaviors through the use of strategies; used fu…
Using possible-selves theory to understand the identity development of new teachers
Hispanic Students' Perception of White Teachers' Mastery Goal Orientation Influences Sense of School Belonging
This study postulated a structural model to investigate the degree of influence that White middle-level teachers who employ mastery goal orientation and academic pressure may have on Hispanic students' sense of school belongingness. Participants were 434 5th and 6th grade students and 21 teachers. Initial proposed model estimates fit the data adequately when employing certain fit criteria (Comparative Fix Index = .92, standardized root mean squar…
Use of Self-perspectives and their Sources to Predict the Mathematics Enrollment Intentions of Girls and Boys
Does burnout begin with student-teaching? Analyzing efficacy, burnout, and support during the student-teaching semester
The Role of Cognition, Motivation, and Emotion in Explaining the Mathematics Achievement Gap Between Hispanic and White Students
The authors investigated the relationships between cognitive, motivational, and emotional variables across Hispanic and White students to predict mathematics performance. A theoretically based structural model fit a total sample of 666 4th- to 10th-grade students well, supporting that self-efficacy, sources of self-efficacy, and emotional feedback were all stronger predictors of mathematics performance than general mental ability. Tests of the st…
