  • Exploring factors that impact playground design decisions and the effect on children’s physical activity and health: A qualitative case study of stakeholder experiences in Rugby, UK

Open Access•Amy Stringer, Emma Eyre et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•2026

The design and structure of public playgrounds can influence opportunities for children to be physically active. Playground design can impact children’s movement. Decisions regarding playground design are made by playground design stakeholders, a population that is rarely examined in research. Seven design professionals involved in the creation of a large playground in Rugby, UK, were interviewed to understand this gap. Findings showed six key fa…

Open Access•Amy Stringer, Natasha Bayes et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme is a UK Government initiative created to alleviate food insecurity and promote health and well-being among children and their families, who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM), during the school holidays. This process evaluation investigated factors that facilitated and acted as a barrier to the delivery of the HAF Programme from the perspectives of key stakeholders (Co-ordinators, …

  • Reflecting on Early Help with Migrant Families: A View from Practice

Open Access•Koyrun Begum, Tracey Flint et al.•ARTICLE•Practice•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This paper describes a practitioner reflection on early help for migrant families with no recourse to public funds. We used Maclean’s ‘weather model’ to examine the positives and challenges of the work. The reflection led to positive changes in programme delivery, but also highlighted tensions between following a structured practice manual and allowing practitioner autonomy, and the friction that ‘hostile environment’ restrictions caused between …

  • Latino Attitudes Toward Ballot Propositions That Target Immigrants

    Open Access•Adrian Stringer, Amy Stringer•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 17

In response to an increase in undocumented immigrants in the United States, several states have proposed and passed ballot measures that are intended to target immigrants, particularly Latinos. Yet, previous research has often failed to focus on Latino viewpoints in relation to these measures and the restrictions therein. As such, I utilize the 2006 Latino National Survey to examine how different sectors of the U.S. Latino population view policie…

  • Athletic Fatness: Forgiving Corpulence in Elite Bodies

Katherine M Jamieson, Adrian Stringer et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 10

In crafting this analysis of professional golfers John Daly and Laura Davies, we were struck by the contradictions to corporeal rationality that elite, corpulent athletes might enact through their mere presence, as well as through their public ability to compete with idealized athletic bodies. That sport and dominant beliefs about sport contribute to disciplining bodies is not a point of contention for us. It is, however, unclear where the discip…
