Native language background and academic achievement
This study examined the extent to which socioemotional well-being mediated the relationship between language status and achievement, while exploring variability in this relationship based on informant (student versus teacher reports of socioemotional problems) and native language background (Spanish-speaking English language learners [ELLs] versus ELLs from Asian-language backgrounds). Participants included 9,046 fifth-grade students from the Ear…
Transgender community belongingness as a mediator between strength of transgender identity and well-being.
This study examined transgender community belongingness as a mediator between strength of transgender identity and well-being. A total of 571 transgender adults (n = 209 transgender women, n = 217 transgender men, and n = 145 nonbinary-identified individuals) completed an online survey assessing transgender community belongingness, strength of transgender identity (operationalized as the extent to which a person self-categorizes their identity as…
A Multigrade, Multiyear Statewide Examination of Reading Achievement
This brief examined the patterns of reading achievement using statewide data from all students (Grades 3–10) in multiple years to examine gaps based on student, school, and district characteristics. Results indicate reading achievement varied most between students within schools and that students’ prior achievement was the strongest predictor of current achievement. Achievement gaps were identified for males, Black students, students receiving me…
Teachers or Psychologists
The current study evaluates a depression prevention program for adolescents led by psychologists vs. teachers in comparison to a control. The universal school-based prevention program has shown its efficacy in several studies when implemented by psychologists. The current study compares the effects of the program as implemented by teachers versus that implemented by psychologists under real-life conditions. A total of 646 vocational track 8th gra…
School Support, Parental Involvement, and Academic and Social-Emotional Outcomes for English Language Learners
This study examined the relationships among school support, parental school involvement, and academic and social-emotional outcomes for children who are English language learners (ELLs). The sample included 1,020 third-grade ELLs who participated in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K). Results from structural equation modeling showed that higher levels of school support predicted more parental involvement, more parental involvement pr…
Anxiety and depression in transgender individuals
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to examine facilitative and avoidant coping as mediators between distress and transition status, social support, and loss. METHOD: A total of 351 transgender individuals (n = 226 transgender women and n = 125 transgender men) participated in this study. Participants completed measures on transgender identity, family history of mental health concerns, perceptions of loss, coping, depression, and anxi…
Gender Balance, Representativeness, and Statistical Power in Sexuality Research Using Undergraduate Student Samples
In A Backward Glance, Wharton describes her creation of the New England landscape Ethan Frome and Summer by showing her indebtedness to sense of darkness, which she sees as a realistic appraisal of New England life, much more realistic than that of the Realist writers of her own generation. She quite emphatically disavows any allegiance to her female predecessors, Sarah Orne Jewett and Mary W. Freeman, whom she accuses of seeing New England villa…
Self-Efficacy, Intrinsic Motivation, and Academic Outcomes Among Latino Middle School Students Participating in an After-School Program
This longitudinal study examined how academic self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, and participation in an after-school program contributed to the academic achievement of Latino middle school students over the course of one school year. Participants were 47 Latino students in sixth through eighth grades who attended two public middle schools in which an after-school program was held that was specifically for Latino students. Results from ordinary…
Development and Psychometric Properties of the Math and Me Survey
The Math and Me Survey was designed to measure elementary students’ attitudes toward mathematics. The authors conducted content validation, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, item response theory, reliability, and external validity analyses to improve it and to test its psychometric properties. The final Math and Me Survey consists of two scales: Mathematical Self-Perceptions and Enjoyment of Mathematics
Measuring the Mathematical Attitudes of Elementary Students
The purpose of this study was to compare how students in Grades 3 to 6 respond to a mathematics attitudes instrument with a 4-point Likert-type scale compared with one with an additional neutral point (a 5-point Likert-type scale). The 606 participating students from six elementary and middle schools randomly received either the 4-point or 5-point format of the Math and Me Survey. Regardless of whether a neutral midpoint was offered or not, the s…
