Generating and sustaining backward linkages between maquiladoras and local suppliers in Northern Mexico
Limits to the Use and Generalizability of the Views of Life Questionnaire
The factor structures of the Views of Life questionnaire for four data sets collected in northern Mexico were compared with the original structure reported by Diaz-Guerrero (1979). None of the factor structures for these data sets replicated the original. The subscale means and variances were also compared. While statistically significant differences in subscale scores were obtained, little variance was explained by these comparisons (w2 usually …
The impact of Mexico's economic crisis on the demographic composition of the maquiladora labor force
This study focuses on the changes that have occurred since 1982 in the demographic composition of the maquiladora labor force. In the period 1983-1987, the number of obreros employed by the industry has more than doubled, increasing to 262,000 (Table 1). The most important influence on labor demand during this period was the sharp decline in the maquiladora firms' dollar-denominated wage bills. This decline was brought about by the progressive de…
Job placement prospects and attitudes toward employment for undocumented Mexican Border‐Crossers in a U.S. Federal Correctional Institution
The influx of undocumented border-crossers from the Republic of Mexico into the United States has reached alarming proportions. The concern stems not only from their anticipated impact on job markets and social services utilization (Cooper 1985), but also from their growing impact on the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Illegal immigration is a federal offense and punishable by imprisonment in federal facilities. In 1970, the total number of arrested ille…
The hidden cost of worker turnover: A case study in the in‐bond industry in Mexico
Although Mexico's assembly (maquiladora) industry is one of few sectors of Mexican economy that continues to prosper, worker turnover has become a significant and growing threat to its vibrancy. Maquiladoras , or twin plants, are cooperative arrangements whereby Mexican labor, about 75 percent female, (Holden 1984) assembles components which are transported from United States. Raw materials are cut or formed into recognizable parts in U.S. and sh…
Making it in academic psychology: Demographic and personality correlates of attainment
Citations to published work, personality, and demographic characteristics were examined in a sample of male and female academic psychologists. A large sex difference was found in citations with men receiving significantly more recognition. Reputational rankings of graduate school and current institution were significantly related to citations, as were components of achievement motivation. Mastery and work needs were positively related to citation…

Performance in the Interdependent Classroom: A Field Study
The present study was conducted in 5th and 6th grade classes to compare the performances of Anglos and minorities working in small interdependent learning groups with their performance in traditional, teacher-focused classrooms. A covariance analysis indicated that Anglos perform equally well in both interdependent and traditional classes. Minorities performed significantly better in interdependent classes than in traditional classes
