The Mediating Role of Sense of Control in the Associations Between Remote Contacts and Loneliness Among Older Adults
This study explored whether a sense of control over social life mediated the associations between using remote contact (phone calls, letters/emails, social media) and loneliness for socially isolated older adults. We used path analysis with the 2014 and 2016 Health and Retirement Study datasets ( N = 3767). Results showed that more frequent phone calls and letters/emails were associated with lower levels of loneliness through sense of control. Ho…
Adult Maltreatment Risk Factors: Adding Community-Level Factors to an Individual-Level Field

Adult protective services (APS) agencies are the social services programs responsible for serving older adults and adults with disabilities who may be experiencing adult maltreatment. The adult maltreatment literature differentiates elder maltreatment from the maltreatment of adults with disabilities, yet APS agencies serve both gr…
Attitudes Toward Hispanic Immigrants and Immigration Policies in the United States: Exploring the Roles of Age and Framing Through a Survey Experiment
Hispanic immigrants are the largest immigrant group in the United States. Guided by age stratification theory and framing theory, the present study examined the roles of age and framing in attitudes toward Hispanic immigrants and immigration policies. We used an experimental design to embed survey questi…
A comparison of negative financial events experienced by carers and non-carers following onset of the Great Recession
This study compares carers and non-carers on experiences of harmful financial events during and immediately after the Great Recession. Carer status was associated with experiencing more negative financial events since the Great Recession began, even after controlling for covariates in a negative binomial regression. Carers had a higher odds of reporting: job loss, moving in with family and friends to save money, and selling possessions to make en…

Using Latent Class Analysis to Identify Profiles of Elder Abuse Perpetrators
