Focusing a history of modern philosophy course on freedom
This article is on pedagogy; it is not a report on original research. It is a case study, seeking to spell out some implications for teaching History of Modern Philosophy (HMP). In past courses, I used a classic syllabus: Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Hume, and Kant, focusing on epistemology and metaphysics, telling the standard story of rationalists and empiricists, with Kant breaking the stalemate with his transcendental arguments. After …
Esprit de Corps and thinking on (and with) your feet: Standard, enactive, and poststructuralist aspects of relational autonomy and collective intentionality in team sports
To concretize my discussion of relational autonomy and collective intentionality, I present a case study in which we can see several themes in that scholarly literature exemplified in a real‐life event. The event in question is the Megan Rapinoe‐Abby Wambach goal in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup of 2011, one of the greatest in all World Cup history (A video clip of the goal can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B4q6di‐3fg…
The American Politics of French Theory: Derrida, Deleuze, Guattari, and Foucault in Translation
This is an exceptionally fine book, of interest to intellectual, cultural, and political historians of the 1960s and 1970s in France and the United States, as well as to scholars and students of the philosophers named in the subtitle. It is historically rich, politically informed, and philosophically sophisticated. There is a polemical side to this work, as Jason Demers objects to the deracinated presentation of “French Theory” as primarily a univ…
Edges of the State
This book takes a look at the formation, and edges, of states: their breakdowns and attempts to repair them, and their encounters with non-state peoples. It draws upon anthropology, political philosophy, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, child developmental psychology, and other fields to look at states as projects of constructing â bodies politic,â where the civic and the somatic intersect. John Protevi asserts that humans are predisposed to â…

Deleuze, Guattari and Emergence
The concept of emergence—which I define as the (diachronic) construction of functional structures in complex systems that achieve a (synchronic) focus of systematic behaviour as they constrain the behaviour of individual components—plays a crucial role in debates in philosophical reflection on science as a whole (the question of reductionism) as well as in the fields of biology (the status of the organism), social science (the practical subject) …
Deleuze and Geophilosophy: A Guide and Glossary
Deleuze and Geophilosophy: A Guide and Glossary offers a comprehensive overview of Gilles Deleuze's geophilosophy, providing clear explanations of key concepts and their applications. The book explores Deleuze's engagement with geographical thought, demonstrating how his philosophy can be used to understand spatial relations, territoriality, and the relationship between humans and the environment. It serves as both an introductory guide and a val…

Rhythm and Cadence, Frenzy and March: Music and the Geo-Bio-Techno-Affective Assemblages of Ancient Warfare John Protevi (bio) In one of many such passages in A Thousand Plateaus (hereafter "ATP") Deleuze and Guattari describe the assemblage as the imbrication of the social and the somatic, this time using an example from ancient Greek warfare: Assemblages [agencements] are passional, they are compositions of desire. Desire has nothing to do with…
