Lived Experience, Identity, and Perspectives of LGBTQ+ Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers
Although caregiving research has expanded over the years, LGBTQ + caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) remain understudied. LGBTQ + ADRD caregivers encounter unique obstacles (e.g., elevated stress, barriers to inclusive services, stigma and discrimination) that complicate caregiving experiences and have been understudied in research. To address these obstacles, researchers created the RISE Registry, a na…
Parkinson’s research with inclusion, diversity, and equity
Our findings highlight the unique challenges and strengths of LGBTQ+ PD caregivers. Future research and health service providers should consider ways to address systemic barriers, the importance of culturally competent support, and both the burdens and resilience experienced by LGBTQ+ PD caregivers. Findings underscore the urgent need for inclusive, culturally competent services and resources to support this underserved population
Validation of Wellbeing Scales Among Informal Caregivers of Latinos With Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
We aied to examine the psychometric properties of several wellbeing scales among Latinos in the US, most of which have never been validated in a US-Latino population. We leveraged secondary baseline data from a one-arm mHealth trial on dementia caregiver support. We included 100 responses for caregiver-focused scales and 88 responses for care recipient-focused scales. Scales included the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire Severity and Distr…
Identifying and Ranking Strategies to Address Housing Insecurity and Homelessness Within the LGBTQIA+ Community in Southern Nevada
Housing insecurity is a critical issue within Southern Nevada. However, little is known about the housing-insecurity-related needs of LGBTQIA+ Southern Nevadans. The aim of this study was to identify strategies to address housing insecurity among this vulnerable community. Utilizing community-based participatory research and concept mapping, the most salient solutions were identified and prioritized at a Community Housing Forum. This Forum brough…
Serial Mediation Analysis of the Association of Familiarity with Transgender Sports Bans and Suicidality among Sexual and Gender Minority Adults in the United States
State-level transgender sports bans appear to exacerbate existing disparities in mental health, especially for individuals who are familiar with the bans. They directly discriminate against people who are transgender and indirectly stigmatize the broader SGM community
Moderating Effect of Community and Individual Resilience on Structural Stigma and Suicidal Ideation among Sexual and Gender Minority Adults in the United States
Interventions to bolster community resilience may attenuate the negative mental health impacts of structural stigma and are warranted, along with concerted efforts to minimize structural stigma in the form of discriminatory laws and policies targeting people who are SGM
Feasibility of the Savvy Caregiver Program for LGBTQ+ Caregivers of People Living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
Nearly 350,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) adults in the U.S. are currently living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Informal caregivers face challenges impacting their ability to access and receive adequate and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ persons living with ADRD. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the Savvy Caregiver Program for caregivers of…
Recommendations for Advancing Research With Sexual and Gender Minority Older Adults
By 2060, there will be more than 5 million sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) older adults aged 50+ living in the United States (Fredriksen-Goldsen & Kim, 2017). SGM is an umbrella term that includes, but is not limited to, individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, nonbinary (LGBTQ+), or who exhibit attractions and behaviors that do not align with heterosexual or traditional gender norms (Na…
Childhood Experiences and Mental Health of Sexual Minority Adults
Three models of recalled childhood gender nonconformity (GNC) and maltreatment are proposed to explain disparities in current psychological distress and lifetime suicidality among sexual minority individuals, using a United States probability sample of cisgender lesbian/gay ( n = 701), bisexual ( n = 606), and other (e.g., queer, n = 182) adults. Indirect effects indicated that lesbian/gay individuals were more likely than bisexual individuals to…
