Cross-cultural evaluation of ethnic perspective-taking ability
Cross-cultural evaluation of ethnic perspective-taking ability
Children's development of ethnic perspective-taking ability (EPTA) was evaluated across 2 samples. It was hypothesized that the EPTA construct would be related to ethnic cognitions (e.g., ethnic knowledge, ethnic self-identification) and nonethnic cognition (i.e., social cognition) and that there would be variance in the EPTA construct distinct from a closely related form of social perspective-taking ability (SPTA). In Sample 1, 2nd- and 6th-grad…
Role of Perspective-Taking Abilities and Ethnic Socialization in Development of Adolescent Ethnic Identity
In this article, we report on an investigation of a recently proposed construct of ethnic perspective-taking ability (EPTA). It was hypothesized that: (a) EPTA would be related to ethnic identity, social perspective-taking ability (SPTA), and ethnic socialization; and (b) there would be distinctiveness in EPTA relative to SPTA. Mexican American high school students (N = 43) were administered in-depth EPTA and SPTA interviews and questionnaire mea…
Meta-Analysis of Latino Students' Adjustment in Higher Education
Meta-analytic review of 44 studies exploring Latino students'psychological adjustment to postsecondary education over the past 2 decades revealed that, compared toAnglos, Latino students scored higher on academic andfinancial stress measures and valuing of education. These and other findings were statistically significant, but the practical significance (ie., effect sizes) of much of this literature was small. In order to increase the magnitude o…
