  • Trust strategies in healthcare

    Open Access•Cole Etherington, Samantha B Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

Trust is foundational to the functioning of health systems and public health initiatives, yet it is increasingly strained by misinformation, politicization, and persistent structural inequities. Although multiple disciplines have examined how trust is built, maintained, and repaired, evidence remains fragmented and often lacks sufficient specification to support comparison or practical application. We conducted a scoping review to map empirically…

  • Using an intersectionality lens to explore barriers and enablers to hepatitis C point-of-care testing

Open Access•Guillaume Fontaine, Justin Presseau et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2024

The application of an intersectionality lens provides a nuanced understanding of multilevel barriers and enablers to point-of-care HCV testing. Findings underscore the need for tailored strategies that address stigma, improve provider roles and communication, and foster an inclusive environment for equitable HCV care. Using an intersectionality lens in implementation research can offer valuable insights, guiding the design of equity-focused imple…

  • From “Buzzword” to Best Practice

    Open Access•Cole Etherington, Linda Baker•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2018

Empirical studies on the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on children have burgeoned over the last three decades. Notably absent from existing approaches to studying children exposed to IPV, however, is attention to how various positionalities intersect to impact the experiences of children and their families. In fact, while the importance of an intersectional framework for understanding IPV has been discussed for over two decades, littl…

  • Re-evaluating gender differences in self-rated health

    Cole Etherington•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2017

Research examining gender differences in self-rated health (SRH) has typically not distinguished between age and cohort-related changes in the health of men and women over time. Using longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this study finds gender diffegrences in SRH may actually be an artifact of cohort. Prior to examining health across cohorts, women reported worse health than men. With the introduction of cohort to the model…

  • Youth with Disabilities Talk About Spirituality

    Open Access•Patricia Baldwin, Jan Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

There is little known about what spirituality means for youth with disability or about the potential relevance of youths’ spirituality in pediatric rehabilitation. This study explored perceptions of spirituality for youth with disabilities. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, we examined the lived experiences of eighteen youth ages 11-20 years with disabilities including cerebral palsy, central nervous system disorder or autism spectrum …

  • The Emergence of Naturopathy in Two Canadian Provinces

    T L Adams, Cole Etherington•ARTICLE•Histoire sociale•2015•References: 7

This paper explores the development and regulation of naturopathy in two Canadian provinces, Ontario and British Columbia, prior to 1950. Naturopathy has been a regulated profession in British Columbia since 1936. In Ontario the regulated group, since 1926 until recently, has been ‘drugless therapy.’ Through a comparative case study we not only document the early history of naturopathy, and its regulation, but we explore the factors shaping profe…

  • Educational Trajectories and Health over the Life Course

Open Access•Cole Etherington, Nicole Etherington•ARTICLE•Canadian Graduate Journal of…•2013

Research demonstrates that despite post-secondary expansion, there are still vast socioeconomic differences in educational attainment. Educational attainment can have a tremendous impact on the life course in terms of income, employment, and perhaps most significantly, health. Recognizing these issues, the Niagara region opened the DSBN Academy in September 2011. The DSBN Academy, the first school of its kind in Canada, offers social and academic…

  • Widening Participation through Alternative Public Schools

    Open Access•Cole Etherington•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2013•References: 27

In recent years, the development of the global knowledge economy has rendered post-secondary education necessary for employment and earning potential, with manual labour no longer as prevalent or secure as it once was. Yet, access to post-secondary institutions continues to be stratified based on social class. To support working-class students in obtaining a post-secondary education, some countries have opened alternative public schools geared to…
