Sweden Might Be a Haven, But It's Not Heaven’
This article examines the experience of the 1000 or so Americans who sought refuge from the Vietnam War in Sweden between April 1967 and March 1973. At the time the public discussion surrounding these men was not easily disentangled from the larger political debate being waged between the right and left about the war, and such polemics ultimately distorted the media's reporting on the exiles.
Swedish Vietnam criticism reconsidered
Between 1965 and 1973, Sweden's Social Democratic government emerged as the most strident West European critic of the American war effort in Indochina. Although the latter's unmatched militancy on the Vietnam question had its origins in Swedish domestic politics, this policy likewise had implications for the country's relations to both superpowers. Given that Swedish Vietnam criticism coincided with the relative decline of American economic and m…
The Swedish Left's Memory of the International Brigades and the Creation of an Anti-Fascist Postwar Identity
The article looks at Sweden as an example of how popular memory of the International Brigades in Western Europe has been shaped more frequently by the Left's postwar political needs than by historical realities. Like elsewhere in Western Europe, the International Brigades' legacy in Sweden was principally informed by the Left's eagerness to embrace an anti-fascist identity after the Second World War. In the Swedish case, this has led to a sanitiz…
The Swedish Midsummer Crisis of 1941
Non-alignment in peace and neutrality in war have served as the guiding principles of Swedish foreign policy since 1815. For nearly two centuries, Sweden has successfully avoided armed conflict and entangling alliances. A policy of neutrality has been regarded as the best means of guaranteeing Sweden's continued independence and prosperity. Sweden had managed to remain outside the conflict in the first world war, and sought to do so again in 1939…
