Protecting Refugees in Early Modern Europe and the Atlantic World: Asylum and Privileges for France’s Huguenots
This article looks into practices of refugee protection in the context of the heavy persecutions and mass exodus of Huguenots in the 1680s. In revisiting Huguenot petitions addressed to Protestant princes in Europe and princely edicts offering protection to newly arriving migrants, we will try to discern some patterns in refugee protection and their origins in other legal practices of the period
Facing Two Revolutions: Contemporaneous German Public Opinions of the American and French Revolutions

Political science and the history of migration: Entretien avec Susanne Lachenicht
Olaf Kleist points out how political scientists use historical analysis in migration studies in three ways: tracing developments, comparing cases, and analyzing the political use of migration history. Problems arise from the eclectic use of historical contexts and data, the ignorance of migration phenomena prior to 1648 and how political scientists tend to ignore complex historical developments. Kleist argues for better comparisons between the an…
Multiple Atlantics
This chapter discusses the construction, coexistence, and confrontation of multiple Atlantics over time and space. Historically, an Atlantic World came into being from the fifteenth century onwards, connecting regions, people, goods, and ideas in Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. From the 1400s onwards, Europeans entered ‘a maritime sphere without competition – without the adversaries of the eastern oceans: Arabs, Chinese, Malays, …

Refugees and Refugee Protection in the Early Modern Period
The persecution of religious and/or ethnic minorities in early modern Europe was a rather common phenomenon. The Alhambra Edict of 1492, followed by the expulsion of some 150,000–165,000 Sephardi Jews from the territories of the Catholic Monarchs and the Edict of Fontainebleau of 1685 are but two of the best-known incidents causing the dispersion of some hundred thousand people, confronting Europe with the need to accommodate refugees on a large …

Ethnicity
“Ethnicity” is a term that we owe to the 20th century. It first appeared in W. Lloyd Warner and Paul S. Lunt’s The Social Life of a Modern Community (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1941). In 1972, it found its way into the Supplement of the Oxford English Dictionary. “Ethnicity” is a sociological concept. It is meant to replace older, tainted terms such as “race,” “nation,” or “minority.” In North America, terms such as “nation” or “nation…
Migrations and Diasporas
Between 1492 and 1866 millions of people crossed the Atlantic—from Africa’s west coast (from 1500 to 1866, an estimated 12 million people) and from western and central Europe (from 1500 to 1783, an estimated 1.4 million people)—in order to resettle (or be resettled) in the so-called New World. The age of mass migrations of Europeans only started in the 18th century, followed by the immigration of Asians and eastern Europeans, mostly from the 19th…

Huguenot Immigrants and the Formation of National Identities, 1548–1787
This article addresses the extent to which Protestant states in Europe and North America depicted the French Protestants who had found refuge in these states, as having contributed to the process of nation building and the formation of national identity. It is shown that the arrival of Huguenots was portrayed positively as the historians of these nations could contend that Huguenots had been absorbed readily into the host society because their vi…
