    Open Access•Clara García-Moro, Clara García‐moro et al.•ARTICLE•Magallania•2015

A partir de los datos del Registro Civil chileno, se ha analizado la evolución de la mortalidad en la región de Magallanes entre 1885 y 1920. Based on the incorporation of modern agrarian techniques, this region has experienced a great economic development. Its demographic consequences were relevant, such as the arrival of immigrants throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The analysis of …

  • Inbreeding from isonymy and repeated pairs of surnames in the Ebro Delta region (Tarragona, Spain)

Open Access•Mireia Esparza, Clara García-Moro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of inbreeding calculated from isonymy with its random (Fr) and nonrandom (Fn) components, and repeated pairs of surnames (RP2) and their random component (RP2r) in the Ebro River Delta region (Tarragona, Spain). This region is made up of four parishes, and data correspond to the period 1939-1995. The global results are on the same levels as observed in other studies, but the values obtained in 3 of …

  • Genetic Relationships Between Parishes in the Ebro Delta Region (Spain) as Estimated by Migration Matrix and Surnames

    Mireia Esparza, Clara García-Moro et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 1

To determine whether there are preferential relationships among individuals from the different parishes of the Ebro River delta region, we analyzed the population relationships, taking into account both the birthplaces of the spouses and their surname frequencies. We used data from the 9,085 marriages recorded in the Ebro delta area between 1939 and 1995. Using each spouse's birthplace, we calculated the distances between the subject populations …

  • Time Series Analysis of the Epidemiological Transition in Minorca, 1634-1997

Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models provide a powerful tool for detecting seasonal patterns in mortality statistics. The strength of ARIMA models lies in their ability to reveal complex structures of temporal interdependence in time series. Moreover, changes in model parameters provide an empirical basis for detecting secular trends and death seasonality patterns. This approach is illustrated by our analysis of changes in the …

  • Stature estimation in extinct Aónikenk and the myth of Patagonian gigantism

Open Access•Miquel Hernández, Clara García-Moro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1998

The Aónikenk were a hunter-gatherer group that inhabited the southern extreme of Patagonia at European Contact and became extinct at the end of the 19th century. The myth of Patagonian gigantism developed around these aborigines from early Spanish explorer accounts. In this study, the postcranial remains belonging to the Aónikenk (Patagonia) and the Selk'nam (Tierra del Fuego) preserved at the Instituto de la Patagonia (UMAG, Chile) have been mea…

  • Marriage Patterns of California's Early Spanish-Mexican Colonists (1742–1876)

    Open Access•Clara García-Moro, Clara García‐moro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1997

Marriage patterns of California's eighteenth and nineteenth century Spanish-Mexican families are analysed using data from genealogies and mission records. A shortage of women among the military based colonists led to an unusual marriage pattern with a large age differential between husbands and wives. The average age at marriage was 18·4 years for women and 28·4 years for men. Spatial mobility was high for both sexes, particularly for men. More h…

Craniometric data from the three extinct tribes that inhabited Tierra del Fuego (Selk'nam, Yámana, and Kawéskar) were gathered following Howell's measurement technique. We studied 180 skulls preserved at thirteen different institutions. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) between groups showed that morphological similarities among Fueguian groups are far more important than some differences between marine (Yámana and Kawéskar) and terrestrial (Selk'nam)…
