  • The continuity of sacred spaces in the North Pontic Steppe

Open Access•Світлана Іванова, Svitlana Ivanova et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026•Referencias: 7

This article examines a monumental structure in the North Pontic Steppe that was repurposed as a burial mound in the late fourth millennium BCE. The authors argue that this repurposing reflects a pattern of Yamna appropriation of ritual spaces, conceptualised as a ‘continuity of sacred spaces’

  • The Origins and Chronology of the Usatove Culture

    Open Access•Alexey G Nikitin, Світлана Іванова et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2022

Usatove was an important southeast European culture, part of Gimbutas’ kurgan cultures, that connected the world of farmers of Old Europe with the rising influence of steppe nomads at the Eneolithic–Bronze Age transition. While the Usatove culture is currently placed within the late Eneolithic–Early Bronze Age chronological period, emerging evidence suggests the culture formed genetically and culturally in the early part of the 4th millennium BCE…

  • First isotope analysis and new radiocarbon dating of Trypillia (Tripolye) farmers from Verteba Cave, Bilche Zolote, Ukraine

    Open Access•Malcolm Lillie, Malcolm C Lillie et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2017

This paper presents an analysis of human and animal remains from Verteba cave, near Bilche Zolote, western Ukraine. This study was prompted by a paucity of direct dates on this material and the need to contextualise these remains in relation both to the transition from hunting and gathering to farming in Ukraine, and their specific place within the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture sequence. The new absolute dating places the remains studied here in Try…

  • Comprehensive Site Chronology and Ancient Mitochondrial DNAAnalysis from Verteba Cave – a Trypillian Culture Site of Eneolithic Ukraine

    Open Access•Alexey G Nikitin, Mykhailo Sokhatsky et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2010•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 10

this manuscript presents a study of a ritual site of the trypillian culture complex (tc) in western Ukraine where material artefacts are found side-by-side with human and animal remains. The organic content in pottery sherds made it possible to carbon date the ceramics found with bone remains, thus allowing a reference point for carbon dating bone collagen. this allowed us to develop a comprehensive chronology of the usage of the cave. Mitochondr…

  • Mitochondrial DNA Sequence Variation in the Boyko, Hutsul, and Lemko Populations of the Carpathian Highlands

    Alexey G Nikitin, Igor T Kochkin et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2009

Genetic studies of the distribution of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups in human populations residing within the Carpathian Mountain range have been scarce. We present an analysis of mtDNA haplogroup composition of the Boykos, Hutsuls, and Lemkos, three population groups of the Carpathian highlands. In our study Hutsuls had the highest frequency of subhaplogroup H1 in central and eastern Europe. Lemkos shared the highest frequency of haplogr…
