  • Food insecurity and consumption of cariogenic foods in mothers and their two‐year‐old children in Appalachia

Open Access•Deesha Bhaumik, Casey D Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2023

Food insecurity is associated with higher consumption of foods that increase risk of dental caries, but this association is modified by maternal education, income, and state residence. Food insecurity, and its socioeconomic determinants, should be considered when designing and implementing interventions to prevent dental caries

  • Mother’s Experience of Conflict Within Their Family Social Network when Advocating for Children’s oral Health

Open Access•Jacqueline M Burgette, Ami V Trivedi et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2022

  • Racism in oral healthcare settings

    Open Access•Kalo C Sokoto, L F Platt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Together, experiences of racism in oral healthcare settings and dental care-related fear/anxiety are predictive of decreased dental utilization for Black/African American women living in Appalachia. This study provides insight into racism in oral healthcare settings as a social determinant of dental anxiety/fear and inequities in dental utilization

  • Prevalence of Torus Palatinus and association with dental arch shape in a multi-ethnic cohort

Open Access•Ahmed M El Sergani, Joel Anderton et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2020

Ethnic differences in TP frequency were present only in females. Further, females have considerably higher rates of TP than males in each population tested. Further studies of TP at earlier time-points and in connection to other aspects of craniofacial growth may shed light on these sex and ethnic differences.

  • Effects of Smoking and Genotype on the PSR Index of Periodontal Disease in Adults Aged 18–49

Open Access•Deborah E Polk, Xiaojing Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

Studies have found both genetic and environmental influences on chronic periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among previously identified genetic variants, smoking status, and two periodontal disease-related phenotypes (PSR1 and PSR2) in 625 Caucasian adults (aged 18–49 years). The PSR Index was used to classify participants as affected or unaffected under the PSR1 and PSR2 phenotype definitions. Using logistic…

  • The PhenX Toolkit

    Open Access•Carol M Hamilton, Lisa C Strader et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2011

The potential for genome-wide association studies to relate phenotypes to specific genetic variation is greatly increased when data can be combined or compared across multiple studies. To facilitate replication and validation across studies, RTI International (Research Triangle Park, North Carolina) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (Bethesda, Maryland) are collaborating on the consensus measures for Phenotypes and eXposures (PhenX…

  • Intraobserver error associated with measurements of the hand

Open Access•Seth M Weinberg, Nicole M Scott et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2005

Measurements of the hand are common in studies that use anthropometric data. However, despite widespread usage, relatively few studies have formally assessed the degree of measurement error associated with standard measurements of the hand. This is significant because high amounts of measurement error can invalidate statistical results. In this paper, intraobserver precision estimates for measures of total hand length and total 3rd-digit length w…

  • Dermatoglyphic Fingerprint Heterogeneity Among Individuals with Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip With or Without Cleft Palate and Their Unaffected Relatives in China and the Philippines

    Nicole M Scott, Nicole Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•References: 1

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is a common birth defect (birth prevalence ranging from 1/500 to 1/2,000) with a complex etiology. Traits potentially related to CL/P, such as dermatoglyphics, may reflect the genetic and epidemiologic heterogeneity observed in CL/P. Such phenotypic heterogeneity in dermatoglyphic patterns may account for some of the variability in previously reported associations of dermatoglyphics and CL/P. To test …
