  • Where Are They Now: An Update on the Career Development of Recent Aaag Student Prize Winners

Holly M Mortensen, Mark Zlojutro et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2012

Where Are They Now? An Update on the Career Development of Recent AAAG Student Prize Winners Holly M. Mortensen, Ph.D. , Mark Zlojutro, Ph.D. , and Ellen E. Quillen, Ph.D. Since winning the 2004 AAAG student prize in Tempe, AZ, my career has taken some interesting turns that have led me away from academia to a career with the US Federal government at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Maryland (UM…

  • Genetic Architecture of a Small, Recently Aggregated Aleut Population: Bering Island, Russia

Rohina Rubicz, Mark Zlojutro et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2010

The fishing community of Bering Island, located in the Russian Commander Islands off the Kamchatka Peninsula, was originally founded by a small number of Russian soldiers and merchants, along with Aleuts forcibly relocated from the western region of the Aleutian archipelago. The purpose of this study is to characterize the genetic variation of Bering Island inhabitants for autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y-chromosome DNA and classic genetic markers…

  • Mitochondrial DNA Diversity in Mennonite Communities from the Midwestern United States

    Phillip E Melton, M J Mosher et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2010

We examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in six Mennonite communities from Kansas (Goessel, Lone Tree, Garden View, Meridian, and Garden City) and Nebraska (Henderson) to determine their genetic structure and its relationship to population history. Mitochondrial DNA haplogroup and haplotype information were obtained from blood samples from 118 individuals. Molecular genetic variation was analyzed using diversity measures, neutrality test s…

  • Surname Distributions and Their Association with Y-Chromosome Markers in the Aleutian Islands

    Orion M Graf, Mark Zlojutro et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 3

We examine surname distribution, origin, and association with Y-chromosome haplogroups in native communities from the Aleutian archipelago. The underlying hypothesis is that surnames and Y-chromosome haplogroups should be associated because both are paternally inherited markers. We used Lasker's coefficient of relationship through isonymy (Rib) to identify the distribution of 143 surnames in the Aleutian Islands. The geographic distribution of su…

  • Origins of Aleuts and the Genetic Structure of Populations of the Archipelago: Molecular and Archaeological Perspectives

    M H Crawford, Rohina Rubicz et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2010•Cited by: 17•References: 10

We summarize the results of a field and laboratory research program (1999–2006) in the Aleutian Islands on the origins of the inhabitants of the archipelago and the genetic structure of these populations. The Aleuts show closest genetic affinity to the contemporary Siberian Eskimos and Chukchi of Chukotka and differ significantly from the populations of Kamchatka (the terminus of the archipelago) and Alaskan Eskimos. Our findings support the hypo…

  • Mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome variation in five eastern Aleut communities: Evidence for genetic substructure in the Aleut population

Open Access•Mark Zlojutro, Rohina Rubicz et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2009

Since Russian contact in 1741, the Aleut communities of southwestern Alaska have undergone a series of demographic upheavals stemming from forced relocations, disease epidemics, population bottlenecks, and pervasive admixture with European populations. This study investigates the impact of key historical events on the genetic structure of the Aleut population through analysis of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA variation in five eastern Aleut c…

  • Coalescent simulations of Yakut mtDNA variation suggest small founding population

    Open Access•Mark Zlojutro, Larissa A Tarskaia et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 27

The Yakuts are a Turkic‐speaking population from northeastern Siberia who are believed to have originated from ancient Turkic populations in South Siberia, based on archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence. In order to better understand Yakut origins, we modeled 25 demographic scenarios and tested by coalescent simulation whether any are consistent with the patterns of mtDNA diversity observed in present‐day Yakuts. The models consist of eithe…

  • Biological aging and Cox hazard analysis of mortality trends in a Mennonite community from south‐central Kansas

Open Access•Phillip E Melton, Mark Zlojutro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

This study investigated mortality in 568 individuals from the Goessel Mennonite community in rural central Kansas. There were three main objectives to this research: 1) characterize mortality trends within a biologically well‐defined Mennonite community; 2) determine what biochemical, morphological, and physiological risk factors could be related to all‐cause mortality, stratified by age and sex; and 3) compare these results to previously describ…

  • Genetic structure of the Aleuts and Circumpolar populations based on mitochondrial DNA sequences: A synthesis

Open Access•Mark Zlojutro, Rohina Rubicz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Cited by: 13•References: 71

The mtDNA variation of 198 Aleuts, as well as North American and Asian populations drawn from the literature, were analyzed to reconstruct the Aleuts' genetic prehistory and to investigate their role in the peopling of the Circumarctic region. From median‐joining network analysis, three star‐like clusters were identified in the Aleuts within the following subhaplogroups: A3, A7 (an Aleut‐specific subclade of A3), and D2. Mismatch analyses, neutra…

  • MtDNA Variation in the Altai-Kizhi Population of Southern Siberia: A Synthesis of Genetic Variation

    Christine Phillips-Krawczak, Eric J Devor et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The native peoples of Gorno Altai in southern Siberia represent a genetically diverse population and have been of great interest to anthropological genetics. In particular, the southern Altaian population is argued to be the best candidate for the New World ancestral population. In this study we sampled Altai-Kizhi from the southern Altaian village of Mendur-Sokkon, analyzed mtDNA RFLP markers and HVS-I sequences, and compared the results to othe…

  • Autosomal STR Variation in a Basque Population: Vizcaya Province

    Mark Zlojutro, A González Apraiz et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 4

We have characterized 68 unrelated Basque individuals from Vizcaya, Spain, for 13 tetrameric short tandem repeat (STR) loci: CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, FGA, TH01, TPOX, and VWA. Interpopulational analyses were also performed for 21 European and North African population data sets for nine of the STRs typed in the Basque sample. Heterozygosity values for the Vizcayan Basques were found to be high, ra…

  • Applications of Pooled DNA Samples to the Assessment of Population Affinities: Short Tandem Repeats

    M H Crawford, Poulabi Banerjee et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•References: 1

Pooled DNA samples have been used in association studies of Mendelian disease genes. This method involves combining equal quantities of DNA from patients and control subjects into separate pools and comparing the pools for distributions of genetic markers. In this study identical quantities of DNA from 300 individuals representing 6 populations were pooled and amplified for 296 loci using the touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The …
