A Study of Nutritional Status and Obesity among the Adult Nepalese of Karseong, Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India
Obesity is one of the most challenging chronic disease threats facing our country today. It has profound health and economic consequences for our patients and our country. In clinical practice, overweight and obesity are diagnosed by body mass index (BMI), which represents a measure of a patient’s weight for their height. There are various reasons why people became fatty and gain overweight. It is a medical problem associated with environmental a…
Association of Finger Ridge Pattern and E-Beta-Thalassemia: A Study on Bengalee Population of West Bengal, India
There is well documented relationship between dermatoglyphics and specific syndromes of genetic origins. Since beta-thalassemia is a major genetic disorder in West Bengal, India, therefore, rapid diagnosis of major beta thalassemia along with certain preventive measures is of utmost significance. The aim of the present study was to understand the association of the finger prints patterns among the E-beta thalassemia patients of Bengalee Hindu Cas…
Variations of scalp, pubic and axillary hair
Hair examinations and comparisons conducted by forensic scientists often provide investigative and associative information. Apart from its length and its natural color, hair displays a morphologic diversity both macroscopically and microscopically. Pseudogenization of <phihHaA type I hair keratin gene inactivation highlights dramatic differences and is thought to be one of the strongest reasons for localization of hair in human. Therefore, humans…
Maternal fetal interaction in the ABO system: A comparative analysis of healthy mother and couples with spontaneous abortion in Bengalee population
Objectives: The selective effects on genotypes could generally be perceived by its manifestation in prezygotic and postzygotic stages, which is further extendable to neonatal and postnatal periods in human. Selective elimination of genotypes could generally be perceived by the study of reproductive performance of the couple on the basis of their mating types. Actual studies on the products of conception, living, or dead (aborted material) of thes…
Study on Finger and Palmar Dermatoglyphics Among the Sunni Muslims of West Bengal
Bilateral palm and fingerprints of 225 Sunni Muslim males of Howrah district, West Bengal, India were studied in the present cross-sectional study. Dermatoglyphic trait includes finger ball pattern, ridge counts and main line formula. The results revealed that among adult Sunni Muslin males, the overall frequency of whorl was higher followed by loop and arch. The mean TFRC was higher in right hand (99.16 ± 38.60) compared to left hand (67.64 ± 20…
A study on nutritional status among young adult Bengalee females of Kolkata: Effect of Menarcheal Age and Per Capita Income
Nutritional status and its association with age at menarche and per capita income was studied in a sample of one hundred seventy five young adult post menarche Bengalee females of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Height and weight were measured following standard technique and BMI was calculated. Information regarding age, age at menarche, per capita income etc. were collected through schedule. The results of the linear regression analysis revealed t…
Relationship between anthropometric measures and body composition among Muslim females of West Bengal, India
The human body composition is assessed to determine percent body fat (PBF), fat mass (FM), and lean body mass or fat free mass (FFM). The topological distribution of body fat has been the subject of many studies in the world and India. To the best of our knowledge the present paper is the first report on the body composition in terms of PBF and FM, and their relationship with anthropometric measures in Muslim females in India. The present study e…
Relationship Between Anthropometric Measurements and Body Composition Among Santal Girls Aged Between 6-18 Years of Galudih, Jharkhand, India
A cross sectional study of 116 Santal girls was undertaken to compare the relationship of biceps and triceps skinfolds, waist, hip and mid upper arm circumferences, waist-hip ratio and conicity index with three body composition variables; percentage of body fat, fat mass and fat free mass of the anthropometric characteristics. Waist circumference displayed the strongest correlations (p,0.001) with present body fat (r=0.85) and fat mass (r=0.86). …
Income, Birth Order, Siblings, and Anthropometry
The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship and effect of monthly household income, birth order, and number of siblings on adult body dimensions, adiposity index, and body composition among adult Bengali females. One hundred seventy-one adult Bengali females, age 20.35 +/- 1.51 years (mean +/- SD; range: 18-21 years) from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) were studied. Anthropometric measures (weight, height, waist …
A Comparative Study on Anthropometric Variables in Two Communities of West Bengal, India
A comparative study on anthropometric measurements and adiposity indices among adult (18 - 23 years)Hindu (n=100) and Muslim (n=100) females showed significant difference (p<0.001) except maximum hip circumference. The study also revealed that Hindu females had higher overall and abdominal fat deposition than Muslim females. Comparisonof body mass index cut off values (WHO, 1995) revealed that among Muslim females frequency of under nutrition wash…
Study of blood groups, ABH secretors and hemoglobin variants in three upper castes of West Bengal, India
In a serological survey it is found that the Brahmins, Kayasthas and Vaidyas, the three upper castes of Bengalis in West Bengal, cannot be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to ABO blood groups. The Brahmins and Kayasthas differ only slightly in the chromosome frequencies of RH blood groups. The difference in allele frequency for the secretor gene between the Brahmins and Kayasthas is negligible, but there is a marked decrease in frequenc…
Study of blood groups and haemoglobin variants among the Santal tribe in Midnapore District of West Bengal, India
Blood specimens of the Santals in Midnapore District of West Bengal, India were tested for the antigens A, B, C, D, E, c and e, when the incidence of B gene was found to be 26.8%. Another feature of the Santals was the high frequency (74.6%) of CDe chromosome with complete absence of cde. Trace of sickle‐cell trait was also noticed among the Santals as is known to occur in some of the aboriginal tribes of the Nilgiri Hills, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat…
