Admixture and Genetic Connectivity
Assam serves as a melting pot where various ethnicities converge, shaped by its strategic location bordering the six northeastern states and neighboring countries. This study examines the genomic ancestry of Indo-Aryan speakers in Assam, a region at the eastern edge of the Indian subcontinent known for its diverse linguistic and cultural influences. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) revealed that Assamese Indo-Aryans cluster closely with Bangla…
Turtle Hunting by the Tharu Tribes
The Tharus are a prominent group of tribes who have lived in the Tarai belt of Nepal and India for centuries, relying on the forest for their survival. This ethnozoological study focuses on turtle collection and consumption by the Tharu community in the Rupandehi district of Nepal, discussing the distribution and abundance of turtle species and this community’s unique spearing method of turtle hunting. In this study, Tharu turtle hunters were hir…
Prevalence of Low EPHX1 Activity‐Associated Genotypes in Himalayan Populations of India
Objectives The EPHX1 gene encodes human microsomal epoxide hydrolase 1, which helps in biotransformation processes. Its activity is influenced by combinations of genotypes at its polymorphic sites. There are no data on the EPHX1 gene variants in the Indian Himalayan and adjoining populations (HAAPs). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the activity‐associated genotypes of the EPHX1 gene variants in the HAAPs. Materials and Methods The EPHX1…
Signatures of high altitude adaptation in Tibeto‐Burman tribes of the Darjeeling Hill Region
Objectives The long‐term isolation, endogamy practices, and environmental adaptations have shaped the enormous human diversity in India. The genetic and morphological variations in mainland Indians are well studied. However, the data on the Indian Himalayan populations are scattered. Thus, the present study attempts to understand variations in the selected parameter among four Tibeto‐Burman speaking ethnic tribal populations from the Darjeeling H…
Vaccine hesitancy for coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 in Varanasi India
With the rollout of the world's largest vaccine drive for SARS-CoV-2 by the Government of India on January 16 2021, India had targeted to vaccinate its entire population by the end of 2021. Struggling with vaccine procurement and production earlier, India overcome these hurdles, but the Indian population still did not seem to be mobilizing swiftly toward vaccination centers. The severe second wave has slowed the vaccination pace and was also one …
Haplogroup diversity in the Indian population using 23 Y-STRs
These data represented the potential value of the PowerPlex ® Y-23 multiplex system for the forensic and human genetics application in the population of Madhya Pradesh, India. Simultaneously the Haplogroup analysis revealed information about the multi-geographic origin as well as multi-ethnic genetic affinities of the Madhya Pradesh population
Forensic features and phylogenetic analyses of the population of Nayagarh (Odisha), India using 23 Y-STRs
Phylogenetic analysis with previously reported Indian and Asian populations showed the genetic closeness of the studied population to different Indian populations and the Bangladeshi population of Dhaka, whereas the Bhotra population of Odisha and Han population of China showed much less genetic affinity
Population genetic data of 22 autosomal STR loci for the Scheduled Caste population of Rajasthan India
The matching probability for 20 STR markers was observed as 7.02 × 10 -24 and paternity index as 5.55 × 10 7 . These values play a key role in forensic applications. The studied population showed a higher genetic affinity with geographically closer populations than the distant ones. This caste-based population data is expected to play an important role in forensic DNA applications and genetic studies
An evaluation of inter and intra population structure of Uttar Pradesh, inferred from 24 autosomal STRs
Aim The present study was designed to explore the STR diversity and genomic history of the inhabitants of the most populous subdivision of the country. A set of 24 hypervariable autosomal STRs was used to estimate the genetic diversity within the studied population. A panel of 15 autosomal STRs, which is most common in the previously reported data sets, was used to estimate the genetic diversity between the studied population, and obtained unique…
Coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) and Mortality Rate in India
The Covid-19 outbreak is due to a virus which emerged in China at the end of December 2019, and is now widespread in more than 200 countries worldwide (1). Several researches have highlighted that it was introduced to humans from bats (2, 3). The infection spreads like a chain reaction as one infected person passes this virus to two or three others, who then continue to spread it in a similar manner (Figure The number of people infected in a regi…
Genomic diversity of the Muslim population from Telangana (India) inferred from 23 autosomal STRs
Neighbor-joining (NJ) tree and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the studied population showed genetic affinity with communities of Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh states. The genetic data of this study may be useful for forensic, medical, and anthropological studies
The genomic ancestry of Jat Sikh population from Northwest India inferred from 15 autosomal STR markers using capillary electrophoresis
Background Autosomal STR typing using capillary electrophoresis is a reliable method for establishing parentage and for deciphering genomic ancestry.Aim This study was planned to show the genetic diversity of the Jat Sikh population, which is a widespread community of the Punjab region, and to assess its genetic relationship with existing Indian populations.Subjects and methods Blood samples of unrelated healthy individuals of the Jat Sikhs (n = …
Evaluation of the genomic diversity and shared ancestry of the Meitei community of Manipur (India) with the East Asian populations using autosomal STRs
All the studied loci showed a high degree of matching probability and paternity index of 2.83 × 10 -24 and 7.35 × 10 8 , respectively; these are high-level statistical values and indicate that these loci might play a very important role in the application of DNA reports in the courts of justice. The studied population showed a relatively closer genetic affinity with Newar, Kathmandu, and Han Chinese populations compared with the South and West In…

The Andaman Islanders in a Regional Genetic Context
The indigenous inhabitants of the Andaman Islands were considered by many early anthropologists to be pristine examples of a “negrito” substrate of humanity that existed throughout Southeast Asia. Despite over 150 years of research and study, questions over the extent of shared ancestry between Andaman Islanders and other small-bodied, gracile, dark-skinned populations throughout the region are still unresolved. This shared phenotype could be a p…

Population increase and environmental deterioration correspond with microlithic innovations in South Asia ca. 35,000 years ago
Genetic studies of South Asia's population history have led to postulations of a significant and early population expansion in the subcontinent, dating to sometime in the Late Pleistocene. We evaluate this argument, based on new mtDNA analyses, and find evidence for significant demographic transition in the subcontinent, dating to 35–28 ka. We then examine the paleoenvironmental and, particularly, archaeological records for this time period and n…
Reconstructing the Origin of Andaman Islanders
The origin of the Andaman "Negrito" and Nicobar "Mongoloid" populations has been ambiguous. Our analyses of complete mitochondrial DNA sequences from Onges and Great Andaman populations revealed two deeply branching clades that share their most recent common ancestor in founder haplogroup M, with lineages spread among India, Africa, East Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. This distribution suggests that these two clades have likely survived in gene…
