  • Immunoglobulin allotypes in Southwest Asia

Open Access•Moses S Schanfield, Robert E Ferrell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

Southwest Asia has a long history of contact with Central Asian and with Sub‐Saharan African populations. Is the genetic structure of these populations reflective of these historical facts? To study this, data was generated on the immunoglobulin heavy chain (GM) and light chain (KM) allotypes from seven Arab and three non‐Arab populations in SW Asia to examine the relationship of these populations to SE European, NW Indian, Sub‐Saharan African, a…

  • Applications of Pooled DNA Samples to the Assessment of Population Affinities

    M H Crawford, Poulabi Banerjee et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•References: 1

Pooled DNA samples have been used in association studies of Mendelian disease genes. This method involves combining equal quantities of DNA from patients and control subjects into separate pools and comparing the pools for distributions of genetic markers. In this study identical quantities of DNA from 300 individuals representing 6 populations were pooled and amplified for 296 loci using the touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The …

  • Immunoglobulin Allotypes among Taiwan Aborigines

Moses S Schanfield, Koji Ohkura et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2002•Cited by: 1

The aborigines of Taiwan represent the indigenous inhabitants of the island at the time of the arrival of the Chinese from the mainland. Linguistically, the aboriginal Taiwanese are related to the Malayo-Polynesian-speaking inhabitants of Indonesia and the Philippines. Three tribes occupied lowland areas while six tribes occupied highland areas. Previous studies indicate that genetic markers associated with malaria occur in lowland populations. T…

  • Genetic admixture and gallbladder disease in Mexican Americans

Open Access•Marilyn Tseng, Robert C Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1998

Gallbladder disease is a common source of morbidity in the Mexican American population. Genetic heritage has been proposed as a possible contributor, but evidence for this is limited. Because gallbladder disease has been associated with Native American heritage, genetic admixture may serve as a useful proxy for genetic susceptibility to the disease in epidemiologic studies. The objective of our study was to examine the possibility that gallbladde…

  • DNA interpopulational variation in Siberian indigenous populations

    Open Access•J Mccomb, M H Crawford et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1996

Using mtDNA and classical markers, previous studies have found that the Altai are genetically divergent from the rest of Siberia. This study uses five variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) loci to examine the relationship of the Altai to other indigenous Siberian populations. Frequencies of VNTR fragments have been obtained from the DNA of 95 individuals living in the Altai village of Mendur-Sokkon. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that the Altai a…

  • Native American mitochondrial DNA analysis indicates that the Amerind and the Nadene populations were founded by two independent migrations.

Open Access•Antonio Torroni, Thedore G Schurr et al.•ARTICLE•Genetics•1992

Mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) from 167 American Indians including 87 Amerind-speakers (Amerinds) and 80 Nadene-speakers (Nadene) were surveyed for sequence variation by detailed restriction analysis. All Native American mtDNAs clustered into one of four distinct lineages, defined by the restriction site variants: HincII site loss at np 13,259, AluI site loss at np 5,176, 9-base pair (9-bp) COII-tRNA(Lys) intergenic deletion and HaeIII site gain at …

  • Genetic variation at the immunoglobulin allotype loci in Creoles of Trinidad

    Open Access•V M McGowan, Virginia McGowan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1990•References: 7

The sera of a sample of 204 Croeoles from Trinidad were tested for the presence of polymorphic gene complexes occurring on immunoglobulin ligh‐ and heavy‐chain molecules including the allotypic markers IGKC 1, IGHA2 1 and 2, IGHG1 A, X, F, and Z, and IGHG3 G, G5, BO, B1, B3, B4, B5, C3, C5, S, and T. Nine IGHG (GM) haplotypes occur in polymorphic frequencies (>0.1) in this population, including known African, Asian, Caucasian, and Amerindian mark…

  • Immunoglobulin allotypes in Jewish populations living in Israel and the United States

    Open Access•Joan C Stevenson, Moses S Schanfield et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 22

The ongoing interest in the interrelationships of Jewish populations justifies inclusion of the immunoglobulin allotypes in an ethnohistorical analysis. A total of 2,184 serum specimens obtained from unrelated Israeli Jewish and self‐identified Milwaukee, WI, Jewish blood donors were classified as Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Asiatic, or North African and tested for G1m (a, x, z, and f), G3m (b0, b1, b3, b5, g), A2m (1 and 2), and Km (1). Selected sera w…

  • Admixture and Heterozygosity in West Alaskan Populations

    Open Access•Pamela J Byard, Moses S Schanfield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1983

Average heterozygosities for four communities (Savoonga and Gambell on St Lawrence Island, the King Island community now located in Nome, and Wales) are computed from blood allele frequencies. No significant relationship is found between this measure of heterozygosity and the amount of European admixture calculated from gamma globulin haplotype frequencies, indicating that forces other than European gene flow are affecting relative heterozygosity…
